Removing the melted nuclear fuel from the crippled reactors at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant should start within 10 years after “cold shutdown” has been achieved, and decommissioning may take 30 years or more, a government panel projected in a draft report released Friday.
Noting it took about 10 years to finish defueling the Three Mile Island Unit 2 in Pennsylvania, which suffered severe damage to the reactor core in the 1979 accident, the panel under the Japan Atomic Energy Commission said the Fukushima plant would “require more time” for removing the fuel because the situation is more difficult.
