Nation’s newest nuclear reactor operating in East Tennessee via local8now

SPRING CITY, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Tennessee Valley Authority announced that the Watts Bar Unit 2 nuclear reactor is now generating heat under its own power. Soon, TVA says it will produce safe, carbon-free electricity. It’s the nation’s first new nuclear unit in the 21st century.

Once testing is complete, the unit will provide 1,150 megawatts of safe, low-cost, reliable, carbon-free electricity to the Tennessee Valley. Combined with Watts Bar Unit 1, the plant will supply power to roughly 1.3 million homes in the TVA service area.

    In the space of this short article from local media, “safe, carbon free” is used twice, thus perpetuating the myth that nuclear power generation does not entail fossil fuel use, whereas every aspect of the process other than the period of electricity generation itself, beginning with the mining, involves fossil fuels.
