Perry visits Ohio nuclear cleanup site via Chron

Energy Secretary Rick Perry is scheduled to stop off in Piketon, Ohio this morning to tour a former nuclear enrichment facility where cleanup efforts are nearing the three decade mark.

According to the Department of Energy, the Porsmouth plant was built in the 1950s to produce enriched uranium for the military’s nuclear weapons program and later for commercial nuclear power plants.

Clean-up efforts began in 1989, and twelve years later the facility halted enrichment activity.
