TAIPEI, Taiwan — Nuclear power experts Saturday warned Taiwan against adopting dry cask storage for high-level radioactive waste from its nuclear power plants, the Central News Agency reported.
Masakao Sawai from the Japan-based Citizen’s Nuclear Information Center said dry cask storage does not allow regular monitoring of the nuclear waste stored in welded cylinders that are in turn surrounded by concrete structures.
The waste cannot be retrieved from such structures, and when it has to be opened, workers could be exposed to radiation, she said.
