Rosatom: Rostov NPP shutdown unrelated to equipment of its units Source via Russia Beyond the Headlines

The shutdown of two units of the Rostov nuclear power plant is not related to the units’ equipment, a source in State Corporation Rosatom told Interfax.

“The units were disconnected for reasons beyond their equipment, due to maintenance of the Rostov NPP – Yuzhnaya overhead power line. The automatic safety system shut down three out of four main circulating pumps of the first unit and the turbo-generator of the second unit,” the source said.

Currently, the second unit is running at 35% percent of its thermal output capacity and may be connected to the network already this afternoon. The first unit may be connected within 24 hours, the Rosatom source added.

Radiation levels are unchanged and normal on the location of the power plant.

In turn, a source in the nuclear power plant’s press service said that the event had “no safety significance” according to the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES).

“Radiation on the power plant’s premises and around it is on the levels, which correspond to the normal operation of the unit,” the press service said.

“The levels do not exceed those of natural background radiation,” the report underscored.
