TEPCO announced they have removed all of the spent fuel from unit 4. They did not provide details about the removal of the damaged assemblies in the pool but claim only the unused fuel assemblies remain. Those unused assemblies will eventually be moved to the unit 6 spent fuel pool for storage.
This ends the tense issue of the unit 4 spent fuel pool. In the first months after the disaster TEPCO discovered the pool had structural damage leaving a huge risk if the pool were to drain or otherwise fail. Such a failure would have left the plant so dangerous that workers would not have been able to continue working on site. This fast tracked project has been one of the few things at the disaster site that has worked as planned and was done with few failures or problems.
