A public forum on how to use a Geiger counter, with special guest Dan Sythe
(Petaluma 10/1/12) FukushimaResponse.org is hosting a public forum in Sebastopol on Sunday, October 14 to address the subject of Radiation Monitoring Devices. Special guest Dan Sythe, founder and CEO of International Medcom Inc., will share his extensive expertise in the field of radiation monitoring, including the monitoring work he is now doing with Japan, and explain a number of practical details as well, such as: how to identify a good monitoring device, operate it, understand the data it collects, and submit collected data to a citizen’s monitoring network.
This important 2 hour forum will start promptly at 4:00pm at the Sebastopol Grange, 6000 Sebastopol Road. The general public is invited and time will be reserved for Q&A.

International Medcom Inc. has produced high quality hand held radiation detection instruments and systems since 1986. IMI provided community-monitoring systems to the communities surrounding Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. IMI founder Dan Sythe is currently in Japan, working with authorities there to monitor the spread of Fukushima contamination. He will be returning from Japan with updates on the disaster, and is available for interviews as of October 4th.
Dan and IMI have been coordinating their efforts with Safecast to establish a global monitoring network to track radiation from the damaged Fukushima reactors. Through joint efforts with partners such as International Medcom inc., Keio University and MIT Media Labs, Safecast has been building a radiation sensor network comprised of static and mobile sensors actively being deployed around Japan, both near the exclusion zone and elsewhere in the country. In March 2012 they had collected over 3 million radiation data points, published by Safecast and supported by IMI instruments and technology.
The Fukushima Response public forum, “RADIATION MONITORING DEVICES,” takes place October 14 at the Sebastopol Grange, 6000 Sebastopol Road. Wheel chair accessible; doors open at 3:30pm.
