ISU launches new nuclear program via Idaho State Journal

POCATELLO — A new program at Idaho State University aims to inject new blood into the nuclear industry’s aging workforce.

Within the next five to seven years, 49 percent of the operations and maintenance workers in the nation’s commercial nuclear power plants are due to retire, according to the Nuclear Energy Institute.

Seeking to train local students the precise skills required for future job openings, the Idaho National Laboratory has partnered with ISU’s Energy Systems Technology and Education Center to start a Nuclear Operations Technician program.

The new degree will require two years to complete and will have room for 16 students. Eight students have already registered for fall classes.
