SINGAPORE: The government on Monday (May 26) tabled a bill in Parliament to amend the Radiation Protection Act.
This follows Singapore’s decision to accede to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and its 2005 Amendments.
The amendments to the Act are necessary for accession to the Convention, which is a key international legal instrument on nuclear security.
It focuses on the physical protection of nuclear materials.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that Singapore would accede to the Convention during his visit in March to the 3rd Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague.
The bill will provide for better regulation of the treatment of radioactive material and enhance safety for people exposed to radiation.
The bill will also make it an offence to threaten to use nuclear material to cause death, serious injury or substantial property damage.
It will also define a “nuclear offence” and will make such offences extraditable crimes.
