The Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives will urge the government to buy and improve farmland damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, its new chairman said in a recent interview.
He criticized the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry for failing to prevent cattle from being fed with rice straw contaminated by radioactive cesium from the leaking Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant.
Beef from some cattle fed with the contaminated rice straw has been identified as containing cesium levels exceeding the government’s safety limit, affecting beef demand nationwide.
