FUKUSHIMA – The ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s Fukushima chapter said Saturday it will field Bank of Japan Kobe branch manager Takeshi Hachimura, 55, for a gubernatorial election in the prefecture on Oct. 16.
The chapter will meet with Hachimura, who has also worked as head of the BOJ’s Fukushima branch, to make its official request for his participation in the race. The chapter will also ask for support from the LDP’s Tokyo headquarters.
“Hachimura has very strong passion for the revival of Fukushima,” LDP chapter leader Mitsuhide Iwaki told a news conference. He said the BOJ official seems positive.
Current Fukushima Gov. Yuhei Sato, 66, has not made clear whether he will run for a third four-year term. The LDP chapter backed Sato in the previous poll, but in March this year, the organization said it will put up a different candidate.
