The rift between the Shiv Sena and BJP is likely to widen as the Sena is preparing to present a demand to scrap the Jaitapur nuclear power plant in Konkan before Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who holds the Atomic Energy portfolio. Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had promised locals during the Lok Sabha campaign that the project would be scrapped if his party came to power.
The BJP has not spelt out its stand in its manifesto. However, sources in the state government associated with the Jaitapur project said it is unlikely any government would want to scrap the project, which will generate 10,000 MW on completion. There is also an international dimension: the French company Areva is providing technical support.
