電気事業連合会の八木誠会長(関西電力社長)は14日の記者会見で、政府が策定中のエネルギー基本計画に関し、高速増殖炉原型炉「もんじゅ」(福井 県)の実用化に向けた研究計画の見直しが検討されていることについて、「日本は資源が乏しく、核燃料サイクルの中で、もんじゅは必要な施設だ」との認識を 示した。
もんじゅは、原発の使用済み核燃料を再処理したプルトニウム・ウラン混合酸化物(MOX)燃料を使って、発電しながら消費分以上の核燃料を生み出すことが可能とされる。
使用済み核燃料を再処理して再び原発で利用する核燃料サイクルの中核施設だが、大量の機器の点検漏れで原子力規制委員会から無期限の運転停止を命じられている。
