Hiroshima at 70: Why attitudes are changing about the first atomic bomb via the Christian Science Monitor

Seventy years after the bombing of Hiroshima, public opinion is shifting against justifying the event.

On Aug. 6, 1945, the United States dropped one of the world’s first atomic bombs on the seaside city of Hiroshima, killing anywhere between 66,000 to 150,000 people.

At the time, a vast majority of Americans believed it was the right thing to do: A Gallup poll from that year shows that a full 85 percent of the US public said they approved of the use of “Little Boy” on Japan. Only 10 percent disapproved, while the rest said they had no opinion.

But times and attitudes may be changing – a gradual shift that experts say is due largely to both dimming memories of the nightmare that was World War II, and growing awareness of the consequences of nuclear weapons.

“There’s declining support for the idea that it was justified, [especially] among young people,” Bruce Stokes, director of global economic attitudes at Pew Research Center, says in a phone interview. “There’s a better understanding now of the horror of it all.”

[…]

In an echo of that understanding, the number of Americans who say the US was justified in using the atomic bomb has dropped to 56 percent, according to a Pew Research Center poll from this spring. And while that still represents a majority – and although a sense of justification is not the same as outright approval – the figures show a clear decline, Mr. Stokes says.

“I think over the last 70 years, people have become more aware of what the nuclear age is and the consequences of it,” Allan Winkler, a distinguished professor of history at the Miami University of Ohio, says in a phone interview.

[…]

It’s not only Americans whose attitudes are changing. Among the Japanese, there is a growing sense that the use of the bomb was unjustified, with 79 percent saying that it was unwarranted compared to 64 percent in 1991, according to Pew.

“We’re still a long way from sharing the same view,” says Stokes, but the figures do suggest “there is a general overall decline, or a revulsion against, using nuclear weapons … even in a context where people at one point thought it was completely justified.”

Jeremy Corbyn Delivers Speech On Ditching Nuclear Weapons That ‘Destroy Your Neighbour’ To Mark Hiroshima Bombing via Huffington Post

Jeremy Corbyn has said national security is not won through the ability to “destroy your neighbour” with nuclear weapons as he gave a rousing speech to activists to mark the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Addressing those gathered for a Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) commemoration at London’s Tavistock Square, the Labour leadership frontrunner said the “voices of protest” are “very strong” and urged those gathered to “win people over to the idea a nuclear-free world is possible”.

Ditching nuclear arms has been a central promise of the left-wing candidate’s leadership bid, setting him apart from his rivals. Labour abandoned its commitment to unilateral nuclear disarmament in the 1980s.

Stunning polling has put him in first place in the leadership race ahead of Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall, with thousands joining the party for £3 as a “registered supporter” to vote for the Islington North MP.

Grandson of crew member of both B-29s that dropped A-bombs interviews survivors in Japan via The Asahi Shimbun

A twist of fate has led the grandson of the only U.S. crew member aboard both the B-29s that dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 to Japan to meet survivors of those horrific blasts.

Ari Beser, a 27-year-old visual artist, said a “red string of fate” brought him to both cities to talk to hibakusha, or atomic bomb survivors, citing a Japanese legend that says everyone destined to meet has an invisible thread tied to that person.

Beser is working on a project to highlight hibakusha in the two A-bombed cities and those impacted by the 2011 Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant accident.
[…]
Beser’s paternal grandfather, Jacob Beser, had told about his experiences serving as a crew member aboard both B-29s in a book and on TV before his death in 1992 at age 71.

His grandfather had no regrets about dropping the bombs, but believed nuclear weapons should never be used again, Beser said.

His grandfather on his mother’s side was friends with a hibakusha woman from Hiroshima, who has since passed away. Four years ago, Beser met a relative of the friend.

[…]
The A-bomb survivors told him that they “wanted to share their experiences with Americans to help build support for a world without nuclear weapons,” Beser recalled.

He decided to help spread that desire to the world.

Two years ago, he participated in a project by the Japan-based NGO Peace Boat with hibakusha, who shared their experiences on around-the-world voyages.

Among the participants on the voyage was a student from Fukushima Prefecture who said she was unable to return home due to the Fukushima accident.

“I am afraid that people will forget about the accident, and a similar accident might occur again,” Beser quoted her as saying.

Her concerns overlap those of hibakusha.

Ameren decision to scrap plans for new Missouri unit shows hurdles for nuclear via Platts

Ameren’s decision Friday to cancel plans for a new nuclear plant in Missouri underscores the challenges nuclear generation continues to face, particularly in the Midwest.

Construction costs, anemic or nonexistent load growth and the declining cost of alternative generation technologies are among factors cited by the St. Louis-based company for terminating a seven-year effort to secure regulatory approval for a second unit at its 1,190-MW Callaway County nuclear plant.

[…]

The Beyond Nuclear group noted that Ameren lobbyists also failed to persuade Missouri legislators to overturn the state’s 40-year-old ban on construction work in progress, which the company had hoped would help justify the cost of a new nuclear unit.

Ameren also was passed over by the US Department of Energy for hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies for research and development into small modular nuclear reactors, the group said.

Nuclear’s woes do not stop at the Missouri state line, however.

Two years ago, Dominion permanently shut the 556-MW Kewaunee nuclear plant in neighboring Wisconsin, blaming falling power prices, in part.

In September, Chicago-based Exelon, the nation’s largest nuclear generator, expects to disclose whether it will shutter one or more of its money-losing merchant nuclear plants in Illinois.

Last week, Exelon President and CEO Christopher Crane hinted that 1,819-MW Quad Cities and 2,346-MW Byron are the most likely candidates for closing. Both are in PJM Interconnection. The 1,065-MW Clinton nuclear plant, in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator region, also is losing money, Crane said, but its fate probably will be decided later, not until the General Assembly decides to vote in November on a low-carbon portfolio standard bill Exelon said would provide economic support for the nukes.
