Full steam ahead for Darlington nuclear expansion via DurhamRegion.com

Ontario Power Generation officials have cleared another hurdle — an important one — in the bid for a new nuclear build at Darlington.The federal government has given its approval to the environmental assessment of the new build project, with Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver noting that nuclear energy is a “safe, reliable and virtually emissions-free option for addressing Canada’s energy and environmental needs.”

The approval comes after a lengthy process; OPG submitted its environmental impact statement to the feds in support of the project in 2009, along with an updated application for a licence to prepare the Clarington site. That was followed by a joint panel review of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and included federal, provincial and municipal agencies, along with independent technical experts. The panel then hosted a series of public hearings before recommending the Darlington power plant project be approved by the federal government.
