Plans to build a new purpose built facility for the waste have been put on hold

The problem of what to do with Spanish high-level nuclear waste has been put to one side by the Government, more concerned with the economy and with a General Election on the horizon.

There were four applicants to house a new purpose built underground storage unit, with the promise of high levels of local investment as a reward, and the Ministry for Industry has awarded points for each of the applicants:-
Zarra (Valencia) 736 points
Ascó (Tarragona) 732 points
Yebra (Guadalajara) 714 points
Villar de Cañas (Cuenca) 692 points

However the new project is now on hold, and the decision has been taken to send the low and medium level waste, which has a half life of 30 years, to the present storage facility at El Cabril, Córdoba.
