(ANTIMEDIA)Los Angeles, CA — The United States government deliberately hid “the worst nuclear disaster in U.S. history,” according to experts and an in-depth investigation by NBC4 Southern California. Whistleblowers have also come forward to expose the little-known catastrophe, which occurred north of Los Angeles in 1959 and leaked over 300 times the allowable amount of radiation into surrounding neighborhoods. That contamination is now linked to up to a 60% increase in cancer in the area, but the government still refuses to acknowledge its colossal mistake.

The ongoing tragedy was driven by America’s darkest demons, from dogmatic militarism to aggressive corporatism, and ongoing government and corporate efforts to cover-up the disaster are nothing short of staggering.

Whistleblower John Pace, now in his seventies, started working at the facility in January of 1959 and was present on the day of the partial meltdown. He says he has spoken out in recent years because of his guilty conscience. “The radiation in that building got so high, it went clear off the scale,” Pace recalled to NBC4. “They were not able to contain the radiation that was leaking from the reactor.” Blaming equipment failure, Pace said the men working at the facility had two choices: let the reactor explode, a nuclear detonation Pace says “would have been just like the Chernobyl reactor blowing up,” or open the reactor and let the radiation flow out into the atmosphere.

“Do we blow up with it or do we let [the radiation] go?” Pace recalled debating. He was 20 years old. Some workers expressed concerns the wind would blow the radiation directly into the nearby neighborhoods — where their families lived — but with heavy hearts (and upon orders), they opted to release the radiation to avoid a devastating explosion.

As NBC4 documents, “Pace says that dangerous radiation was released for weeks and went whichever direction the wind was blowing. Pace says the large door in the reactor was opened so they could vent the radiation from inside the building. He also remembers that the exhaust stack of the reactor was opened so that radiation could be released from inside the damaged reactor straight into the atmosphere.”

Each time they started and stopped the reactor . . . radiation from the reactor was released,” he said in 2009 when he began to speak out about the disaster. Supervisors at the facility reportedly barred employees from wearing radiation-detecting film badges, knowing that if they were worn, they would detect radiation “higher than the allowable limit.

Pace said he and all of the other workers were “sworn to secrecy” and his boss “[got] right in his face” to make it clear. He says he and his coworkers were “just following orders.” “Nobody knows the truth of what actually happened,” he added.

A 2007 University of Michigan studycommissioned two years earlier by the very same ATSDR that found there was no risk in 2009 —  found rates of cancer increased as much as 60% in areas surrounding the SSFL. NBC4 identified countless residents stricken with cancer who are convinced their proximity to SSFL has led to serious health problems throughout their lives:

  • The Selzer family, which has no history of cancer, has been devastated by the disease:
  • Three of three sisters have struggled with various cancers for years and recently lost their mother to cancer. The daughters played in, swam in, and drank the water running down the hills from SSFL.
  • Bonnie Klea, who worked at the facility as a lab secretary from 1963 to 1971, developed bladder cancer and says people in 14 of 15 homes on her street also developed cancer.
  • Krista Slack suffers from “triple-negative” breast cancer, a rare condition linked to people of African-American and Jewish descent. Slack is neither and her doctor suspects her illness is due to the fact that she grew up in Simi Valley. Her mother died of cancer last year.
  • Arline Mathews lost her son to a rare brain cancer linked to exposure to radiation. When he was in high school, he ran through the Santa Susana hills while training for cross country. Arline Mathews’ grandson now has leukemia, a condition linked to parents with damaged genetic material.
  • Ralph Powell worked as a security guard at SFFL and remembers being covered in flames at the Burn Pits.  “I saw clouds of smoke that was[sic] engulfing my friends, that[sic] are dying now,” Powell said. He also worries he carried radioactive material into his home that caused his son to develop leukemia. He died at the age of eleven.

There are more cases like these, but officials continue to downplay the health dangers.

The Adjacent Children’s Summer Camp

SSFL is located directly next to the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, a Jewish cultural and community center that has been in Simi Valley since 1947 — the same year SSFL was built. The establishment also runs a children’s summer camp that hosts 30,000 children every year. In 1993, an EPA-supervised study found “radioactive elements” in a limited number of soil samples from the Brandeis property, leading Brandeis-Bardin to file a legal complaint against several entities in December of 1995.

E.ON, Fortum to discuss shutdown of two Swedish nuclear reactors via Reuters

Shareholders of Sweden’s Oskarshamn nuclear power plant, Germany’s E.ON and Finland’s Fortum, will meet on Oct. 14 to discuss decommissioning plans for two reactors, plant operator OKG said on Wednesday.

The shareholders are to discuss whether to keep Oskarshamn-2 nuclear reactor – which has been offline since May 2013 – permanently shut, and whether to stop production and start decommissioning at Oskarshamn-1 reactor, OKG said in a filing to the Nordic power exchange.

もんじゅ:機器分類ミスで報告書提出を指示 規制委 via 毎日新聞

高速増殖原型炉もんじゅ(福井県敦賀市)で機器の安全重要度の分類に多数の誤りがあった問題について、原子力規制委員会は30日、運営する日本原子力研究開発機構に対し、10月21日までに報告書を提出するよう指示した。

機構は今年8月、規制委に対し「約3000個の機器の重要度分類が誤っていた」と報告。規制委は9月に検査を実施したが、原子力機構の調査が間に合わず、全容を把握できなかったという。

Renowned Anti-War Japanese Photographer Kikujiro Fukushima Dies at 94 via PetaPixel

Acclaimed Japanese photojournalist Kikujiro Fukushima passed away on September 24th, 2015, after suffering a stroke at the age of 94. Fukushima was known for his criticism of Japan’s decision to go to war in World War II, and he spent decades documenting both the war and the aftermath of it in his homeland.

Fukushima is the only photographer who documented the aftermaths of both the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 and the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011.

“Both are nuclear crises but different kinds,” Fukushima told the New York Times in an interview published last year. “Hiroshima’s crisis was caused by the bomb dropped by the enemy during the war. Fukushima’s crisis, though initially triggered by the earthquake and tsunami, was not really natural. It was caused by Japan’s nuclear industry whose interests more lie in their financial gain rather than the safety of the public.”

“In Hiroshima, I photographed people who were dying. In Fukushima, it looked normal but nobody knows what is going to happen in long term. I didn’t know where to begin.”

High-hazard Hanford waste pipes to be demolished via Tri-City Herald

A little more than a half-century ago, large cask trucks, heavily shielded to provide protection against radiation, would leave the Hanford 300 Area just north of Richland with loads of highly radioactive or particularly hazardous waste that researchers did not want buried too close to town.

Work that started in 2011 to dig up those trenches is nearing completion, with the exception of some waste too close to the buried pipes to excavate until the pipes are cleaned up.

The trenches, used as early as 1954, also have revealed surprises.

Workers found a decontamination cell weighing at least 20,000 pounds buried in the trenches. It’s believed to have come from Hanford’s 327 Radiometallurgy Laboratory. The chamber was used from 1948-60 to decontaminate tongs, casks and other equipment that needed to be repaired.

“It was too big to lift with an excavator,” said Dave Martin, a Washington Closure project manager. A crane was brought in to remove it from the trench. It was wrapped in plastic and disposed of in the central Hanford landfill, the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility.

Although historical drawings of the burial ground showed a tidy grid of trenches, workers have uncovered debris throughout the burial ground and deeper than expected, French said.

Workers expected to go down 20 feet, but waste has been found down to almost 35 feet. That’s in part because of sand that has blown in to cover the burial ground since it was closed in 1963.

By the time the trenches are excavated, DOE expects 2,000 drums of waste to be removed.

More than 600 drums are expected to be unearthed that are lined with concrete, a type of waste container not found in burial grounds cleaned up earlier at Hanford. A pipe was nested inside the concrete and used to hold waste with higher levels of radioactivity.

They likely were a waste disposal container that predated the vertical pipe units, Martin said.

If radiological surveys of the drums show they may contain transuranic waste, they are stored for eventual shipment to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico. Other drums are destroyed, with their waste and concrete mixed with grout before they are sent to central Hanford for disposal.

Other drums have held uranium shavings in oil, uranium oxide powders and miscellaneous debris, all of which have been unearthed at previously cleaned up Hanford burial grounds. Construction debris from tearing down some old buildings also has been unearthed.

The trenches also have contained an unexpectedly high number of laboratory bottles — thousands of them, French said.

The Human Consequences of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant Accidents via The Asia-Pacific Journal: Japan Focus

But these data accounted for only the release into the atmosphere. Radioactive materials were also released into the water systems surrounding the facilities, as well as directly into the ocean. When the amounts released into the water and the ocean were estimated 3, the total amounts released were re-calculated 4. They are shown in Table 1 along with the official data. The ratio of the amount released from Fukushima to that from Chernobyl ranges from 1.2 to 3.1 for the major nuclides, suggesting that the extent of radiation release from Fukushima was very likely more than that from Chernobyl; perhaps more than twice if all were taken account of.

Reality of Internal Exposure
The effects of radioactive fallout from an accident of a nuclear power reactor as well as a nuclear bomb explosion are caused mostly by “internal exposure”, yet no adequate attention has been given to this aspect by the authorities and the associated scientists. The sources of the internal exposure are minute radioactive particles floating in the air, which can be inhaled, and contaminated food and drinks consumed. Radioactivity of foods and drinks produced in the contaminated area is monitored, and those with activity higher than the regulation values cannot legally be marketed.
One cannot well safeguard against ingesting radioactive material, unless one measures the radioactivity of everything one takes in, which is not possible. The issue of “internal exposure” is complicated, and would require another detailed article. For now, three photographs are shown below to illustrate the reality of internal exposure.
Figs. 3 and 4 are the trace of a-particles in the preserved tissues of victims of the atomic bomb explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is not easy technically to take this kind of photo, and scientists succeeded in doing so only recently (11, 12). The source of the first trace is plutonium from the Nagasaki bomb, and that of the second is uranium from the Hiroshima bomb. The plutonium and uranium embedded in the tissues of atomic bomb victims are still emitting a-radiation after 70 years. This says that the fallout of the atomic bomb explosions, which included uranium in the Hiroshima bomb and plutonium in the Nagasaki bomb, somehow got into the body of the victims and stuck in those tissues, and emitted and destroyed the surrounding tissues for 70 years. Both plutonium and uranium have a long half-life, millions of years or more.

Thyroid Cancers among Children in Fukushima

Yet, the authorities and the committee in charge of this investigation have denied causality to radiation from Fk-1 accidents. They argued against causality thus:
(a) Screening effects, that is, they used sophisticated techniques to show that cancers that are ordinarily non-detectable were detected. However, officials admitted recently that screening effects would not be able to explain such a high rate 15.
(b) In the case of Chernobyl thyroid cancers in children appeared only 4 years after the accident. It is too early for Fukushima children to get thyroid cancers. This argument has been rebutted by an article published in the Asia-Pacific Journal: Japan Focus 16.
(c) They checked a few other places in Japan, and say that the thyroid cancer rate in Fukushima is similar to that found in Aomori, Nagasaki and Yamanashi 17. They imply that Fukushima is not abnormal. This study is based on a very small sample in which only one cancer was found; hence the result is not statistically meaningful.
(d) It is too soon for thyroid cancers to appear. It usually takes four to five years. This is in addition to the argument of comparison with Chernobyl (b) above. Hence the cancers found here should have started before the accidents.
(e) The amount of radioactive material released was far lower than that of Chernobyl, and hence would not have such effects as those found in Chernobyl.
A recent report 18 indicates that the latent period for thyroid cancer can be as short as one year in children. The amount of radioactive material released (e) has been discussed earlier, and has been shown to be at least as high as, or even higher than, that of Chernobyl. All of these arguments by the authorities are based on weak or incorrect information.

WTO、韓国断罪へ 日本からの水産物輸入規制 来年にも協定違反を判断via zakzak 夕刊フジ

韓国が、東京電力福島第1原発事故を理由に、日本からの水産物輸入を規制している問題で、世界貿易機関(WTO)は28日、ジュネーブで紛争処理機関会合を開き、審理開始を正式に決めた。日本政府は、韓国の措置を「科学的根拠がなく、不当な差別だ」と訴えており、来年以降、WTO協定違反かどうかの結論が出る見通しという。

韓国は2011年3月の原発事故を受けて、青森、岩手、宮城、福島、茨城、栃木、群馬、千葉の8県の一部水産物の輸入を禁止。13年9月には汚染水漏れを理由に、禁止対象を8県の全水産物に拡大するなど規制を強化した。

 これに対し、日本政府は日本産の水産物について「放射性物質は基準値を下回っている」と強調。原発事故後の日本産食品への規制は撤廃や緩和に向かっており、オーストラリアなど14カ国は全廃している。

 韓国による13年9月の全面禁輸発表が、20年夏季五輪の開催都市が決まる直前のタイミングだったため、その意図に疑念を持つ声も強い。

 日韓両国は今年6月、WTO協定に基づき2国間協議を行ったが、双方の溝は埋まらず、日本政府は8月20日、WTO提訴に踏み切った。

遠藤オリンピック・パラリンピック担当大臣は、東京大会の組織委員会の会長を務める森元総理大臣と会談し、東京オリンピックの追加種目の予選を、東日本大震災からの復興を目指す福島県などで開催するよう要請したのに対し、森氏は前向きに検討する考えを示しました。

これを受けて、遠藤オリンピック・パラリンピック担当大臣は 29日午後、組織委員会の会長を務める森元総理大臣と会談し、「福島県は、東日本大震災の被災地の中でもいちばんダメージの大きい地域で、福島県の内堀知 事からは、例えば、野球やソフトボールなどを開催できないかという要望をいただいている」と述べました。そのうえで、遠藤大臣は「予選は何試合かできると 思うので、福島県をベースにしていくつかの地方で開催する大会になれば、東京オリンピック・パラリンピックが、日本全体のオリンピック・パラリンピックに なる」と述べ、追加種目の予選を、福島県などで開催するよう要請しました。
これに対し、森氏は「福島県のことは当然考える必要があり、日本国民全体がオリンピック・パラリンピックに関心を持って喜んでもらえるなら、福島県だけでなく、地方で開催することも、十分意義のあることだ」と述べ、前向きに検討する考えを示しました。

地方開催で盛り上がり期待

遠藤オリンピック・パラリンピック担当大臣は、記者団に対し、「ソフトボールや野球の予選ができて、日本中の多くの県で、自分のところで1試合 でも開催できるとなれば、その地域の盛り上がりも違ってくる。予算や日程の問題があるので、簡単ではないと思うが、できればいろいろな地域で予選を開催で きればありがたい」と述べました。

石炭火力発電に難問出現? 燃やした灰から強い放射能 via J-Cast News

米国の3大石炭生産地のすべてから、石炭を燃やした後の灰から高濃度の放射性物質が検出されたという研究が発表され、話題を呼んでいる。通常の石炭 火力発電所では、灰がそのまま空気中に放出されることはないというが、研究では灰の埋め立てや貯蔵方法には注意が必要だと指摘している。

日本では「原発ゼロ」に近い環境が続く中、老朽化した石油火力発電所の代わりにコスト競争力が高い石炭火力を新設する動きも進んでいる。今回の研究は、こういった動きに一石を投じる可能性もありそうだ。

灰になると放射能レベルは石炭そのものの10倍に

研究は米デューク大学を中心とするグループが2015年9月2日付で、米国化学会の雑誌「環境科学と技術」に発表した。今回の調査は、15年 10月に米国で石炭灰の処理に関する規則が施行されるのを前に行われた。現時点では、米国の石炭灰の最終処分場では放射線量の測定は行われていないとい う。

調査では、イリノイ盆地、アパラチア盆地、パウダー川盆地の3か所から複数の石炭と石炭灰のサンプルを集め、放射性元素を測定。その結果、イ リノイ、アパラチア、パウダー川の順に放射能レベルが高かった。いずれも放射能レベルは通常の土壌より5倍、石炭そのものよりも10倍以上だった。燃焼の 際に放射能が圧縮されるのが原因だ。

財務省の貿易統計によると、13年に日本が輸入した石炭の量は1億0154万トン。大半がオーストラリアやインドネシア産で、米国産の割合は3.5%だ。

The 20 Percenters: Nuclear Energy Faces Reality – and Its Likely Decline via US News

Once the promise of clean, near limitless energy, nuclear is now in its waning years.

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. – On construction sites in Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee, workers are building what may become the final five major nuclear power plants built in the United States.

Nuclear energy, once a symbol of American ingenuity, the fulfillment of the futuristic promise of near-limitless electricity and near-zero emissions, may soon face an economic meltdown.

Cheap natural gas, together with plummeting prices for wind and solar, has upended the energy sector – not only making nuclear plants’ huge upfront costs, endless regulatory approvals and yearslong construction especially prohibitive, but undercutting the very idea of a centralized power system. Industry and regulators, meanwhile, still have not devised a long-term solution for dispensing of nuclear waste. And despite the best marketing efforts by industry, ever-present safety concerns have little abated since the most recent nuclear incident: the meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi in Japan following a tsunami in 2011.

“The nuclear dream looks pretty tarnished these days: that you would have an inexpensive, reliable and manageable source of energy,” says James Doyle, a former political scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. “What has been shown repeatedly over the decades is that it’s not inexpensive and the question of how to handle nuclear waste has remained problematic, and it appears it will remain so for decades to come.”

But if the future for nuclear looks grim in the U.S., it’s far sunnier overseas, particularly in China and India, where the energy demand is huge and both nations are seeking to rein in their pollution. China, for example, has already built more than 20 nuclear plants and hopes to build another two dozen by 2020. And four years after Fukushima, Japan is once again warming to the idea of nuclear. Even Iran, following its nuclear deal with the U.S. and other world powers, announced in July the construction of new nuclear plants.

“On the one hand, it’s great for China, great for the world – the air pollution there is terrible,” Ferguson says. “On the other hand, I’m concerned about safety, and there’s also the issue of waste and meeting the very stringent construction demand.”

Indeed, in the wake of the massive chemical explosion in the Port of Tianjian on Aug. 12, not to mention a long history of construction issues at major projects throughout China, some observers and groups like CASE have called for the U.S. to back American companies such as Westinghouse as they compete for overseas nuclear contracts against what many describe as less scrupulous or at least less diligent rivals from China, Russia and South Korea.
