Blanket radiation checks on Fukushima rice under debate via The Japan Times

Blanket radiation checks on rice produced in nuclear disaster-hit Fukushima Prefecture have come under debate because no rice with radiation exceeding the safety limit has been found in recent years.

Some people, including producers, in the prefecture call for continuing the current system because there are consumers who still avoid Fukushima produce. But the blanket checks are costly and require a lot of manpower.

The prefectural government hopes to decide by year-end whether to change the radiation checks, starting with rice that will be harvested next year, officials said.

[…]

Fukushima rice is put through radiation checks bag by bag before shipment. The safety limit is set at 100 becquerels per 1 kg of rice.

Rice that pass the checks have certification labels attached to the bags before being put through distribution channels.

According to Fukushima officials, the total amount of rice harvested last year and checked by the end of September this year reached 10.26 million bags.

To cover the expenses, the prefectural government collects ¥5 billion from Tepco each year. Some ¥500 million to ¥600 million in personnel expenses are covered with state subsidies.

The prefecture conducted radiation checks on a total of 53.13 million bags of rice harvested between 2012-2016. Total costs reached ¥30.5 billion.

The blanket check system began with the 2012 rice. At that time, 71 of the 867 bags checked exceeded the safety limit. But no such rice was detected at all for the 2014-2016 rice.

As of Oct. 25 this year, radiation levels stood below the minimum detectable level of 25 becquerels for 99.99 percent of the 2016 rice that underwent the checks.

[…]

The group will examine the issue based on opinions from more than 300 local farmers and seven wholesale companies in the Tokyo metropolitan area. It will also conduct an internet survey of 2,000 consumers nationwide.

Hisao Tomita, a farmer working in the city of Fukushima, called for the continuance of the current system even though it is burdensome also to producers.

As long as Fukushima rice is affected by negative rumors, radiation checks should be maintained even if they have to be scaled back, he said.

The beauty created by the ‘Destroyer of Worlds’ via UNM Newsroom

The cultural phenomenon of nuclear fallout as a collectable
[…]

Part of the heritage Pfeiffer is speaking of is the physical legacy of atomic bombs. A jewel-like mineral Trinitite, was created from the first detonation in the 1940s.

“It’s basically radioactive fallout that we gave a pretty name to. Literally,” says Pfeiffer. “It’s sand that was sucked up into the mushroom cloud or into the fireball, melted and rained down as glass mixed with weapon debris.”

As a result of the plutonium-based nuclear bomb test at the Trinity Site outside Alamogordo, N.M. in the 1945, a large depression was formed. Bits and chunks of Trinitite were scattered in the depression. Some of the stone was removed before most of it was bulldozed and buried by the United States Atomic Energy Commission in 1953. The stone was sold to mineral collectors as a novelty.

[…]

Trinitite, usually a lightshade of green, is quite complex in its make-up and is still radioactive.  Similar minerals, still referred to as Trinitite, have been produced at other nuclear test sites. The color of the stone is based on soil chemistry: Black Trinitite is caused by iron from a shot tower. Red Trinitite is made from copper wire from diagnostic equipment.

“One of the things that has really fascinated me, is how Trinitite, as radioactive fallout, got picked up and mobilized for a variety of purposes,” said Pfeiffer. “On one hand it’s radioactive fallout, and on the other it a popular souvenir where it occupies a space as a remnant of history. They even had an actress wear jewelry made of Trinitite to dispel claims of lingering radiation injury to the Japanese.”

It is illegal now to take Trinitite from nuclear test sites. Which could account for one possible reason why people are buying it online or in gift shops. A small stone, roughly the size of a dime, is going for $35 on Amazon. Other collectors have the stones priced higher depending on their color and composition.

“I’ve had more conversations lately about what the process is for the U.S. using nuclear weapons. Certainly people are re-experiencing or coming to experience a heightened or more intense sense of nuclear arrest,” he said. “One of my hopes is that by examining how we are constructing beliefs and values about nuclear weapons, I can help to identify points that help us alter the process or understand it better.”

Almost 75-years later, intrigue still drives a demand for Trinitite. But Pfeiffer has high-hopes for what it stands for.

“Anthropology is a very optimistic discipline—the whole cultural determinism thing,” he said. “You can look at things that Trinitite represents, and know it doesn’t have to be this way and here’s how we can do it differently.”

Nuclear Power Documentary Film and Panel Discussion Coming to Chatham via CapeCod.com

CHATHAM –The documentary “Power Struggle” will be screened at the Chatham Orpheum Theater on Saturday November 11th,followed by a panel discussion.

The film chronicles the heated political battle to close the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant.

It shows how a nuclear engineer turned whistle blower, a 93-year-old grandmother, and a scrappy new governor, join forces with a wide array of activists to score a major environmental victory by shutting down the aging atomic plant.

[…]

The documentary, which is at times humorous and frightening, captures the views of people on both sides of the issue.

Producers said one fact in the film that can’t be ignored is that high-level radioactive waste will remain at every nuclear power plant around the world indefinitely.

The film’s world premiere was at The Provincetown International Film Festival.

Nobel prize money will no longer be ‘invested’ in nuclear weapons via France 24

OSLO (AFP) –

The Nobel Foundation said Friday its prizes will no longer be funded with investments from nuclear arms producers, just weeks after awarding the peace prize to a nuclear weapons disarmament campaign group.

The private institution, based in Stockholm, is responsible for managing the fund left by the prizes’ founder, Alfred Nobel, a Swedish scientist who invented dynamite.

The cash award given to Nobel laureates comes from this fund, which according to Norwegian environmental organisation Framtiden i Vaare Hender (The Future in Our Hands) is financed with investments in funds from companies that manufacture nuclear weapons.

This means that part of the cash award — which this year was SEK nine million ($1.1 million; 925,000 euros) per category — came from companies such as “Airbus, Boeing, Safran and Northrop Grumman Corp,” so it is “very likely that the Nobel Foundation is invested in companies involved in (the) production of nuclear weapons,” Framtiden said.

The discovery was made all the more embarrassing because the Nobel peace prize on October 6 was awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

[…]

“At the latest, by March next year we will have no investment in anything that is connected with any kind of production which is classified as connected with nuclear weapons”.

Confronted with the revelations on Thursday, the head of the Nobel Institute Olav Njolstad admitted on Norwegian radio that it “doesn’t look good”.

New Mexico’s nuclear weapon legacy honored by senators via Current-Argus

Everything changed in the summer of 1945.

Two atom bombs, the deadliest weapon ever built at the time, were dropped on major cities in Japan.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki would be forever remembered for the heartbreaking destruction that followed.

Almost 100,000 people were instantly killed, and both cities were leveled by the attack.

[…]

About 9,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean, those bombs were developed in New Mexico.

Half a decade earlier, the Manhatten project saw thousands of scientists converge in Alamagordo for the first-ever test detonation of a nuclear bomb.

And by 1945, the first nuclear test took place just outside the south central New Mexican city in the the northern tip of the Chihuahuan Desert.

Generations later, the state’s nuclear research continues at Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories.

[…]

Oct. 30, 2017 was designated as the ninth National Day of Remembrance to honor New Mexican contributions to the country’s nuclear programs, read a news release from Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM).

“Thousands of scientists, maintenance workers, miners, millers and support staff in New Mexico and across the country quietly devoted their lives and sacrificed their health in service of our national defense during the Cold War era,” Udall said.

“This resolution honors the men and women throughout New Mexico and the nation who worked tirelessly, many of whom unknowingly jeopardized their own well-being to develop and support our nuclear deterrent.”

But the bipartisan resolution isn’t only aimed at thanking the state’s nuclear workers.

Udall said he will continue to negotiate with federal lawmakers to ensure Cold War and Manhattan Project veterans have proper access to health services and compensation for their efforts.

He also demanded adequate healthcare for those New Mexicans exposed to radiation during the state’s storied history in the nuclear industry.

“These individuals are patriots, and we must continue to work to ensure that Manhattan Project and Cold War veterans — as well as those affected by nuclear weapons testing — receive the care and compensation they deserve,” Udall said.

[…]

To that end, the senators also introduced legislation this year, the release read, to expand restitution for New Mexicans and other affected by exposure to radiation during weapons development.

Proposed amendments to the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act are intended to broaden restitution to include New Mexico, and increase restitution for those suffering from cancer or any medical problems linked to radiation exposure from weapons development.

“Too many of these individuals remain uncompensated for their hardship,” Udall said. “And I continue to fight for justice for these victims.”
