Olympic torch may start at Fukushima soccer ground via NHK World Japan

The organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are close to choosing J-Village, a soccer training facility near the crippled Fukushima nuclear reactor, as the starting point of the Olympic torch relay.

The Olympic organizing committee has been discussing various proposals for the relay’s starting point, including J-Village.

J-Village served as a base for decommissioning work at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after the disaster.

The national women’s soccer team has held its training camp there.

The final decision on the relay’s starting point will be announced as early as later in March.

The relay is expected to start on March 26, 2020 and pass through all 47 prefectures over 121 days.
