Up to 1 Ton of Tainted Water Leaks at Fukushima Plant via Jiji Press

Tokyo, April 13 (Jiji Press)–Up to one ton of radioactive water has leaked out of a plastic storage tank at Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s <9501> Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, TEPCO said Sunday.

A total of 1,640 becquerels of radioactive cesium per liter were detected in the remaining water, the company said.

According to TEPCO, a worker of a partner company found a leak from the tank at a place some 700 meters away from the shore around 8:40 a.m. (11:40 p.m. Saturday GMT).

The water contained 440 becquerels of cesium-134 and 1,200 becquerels of cesium-137 as well as 1,400 becquerels of beta ray-emitting radioactive substances such as strontium-90, according to TEPCO.
