KyodoNAGOYA — A plan to use fireworks made in Fukushima Prefecture at a festival Sunday in Nisshin, Aichi Prefecture, was canceled after residents — some fearing they could be contaminated with radioactive materials — protested.
Nisshin Mayor Kozo Hagino said he regretted the fact that radiation fears had prevented the fireworks from being used, even though the event was aimed at supporting regions devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, an area that includes Fukushima.
“I would like to apologize to everyone in Fukushima Prefecture,” he said.
