Fukushima N-plant groundwater may be released into sea in May via Jiji Press

Fukushima, March 30 (Jiji Press)–The planned release into the sea of uncontaminated groundwater at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant will start as early as May, industry minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Sunday.

The plan calls on groundwater to be pumped up before it flows into the plant’s damaged reactor buildings and released into the sea.

The plan will be put into place after the sand launce fishing season in the area ends in April, Motegi said in a meeting with fishermen in Soma, Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan.

The meeting comes after the Fukushima Prefectural Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations accepted the groundwater release plan Tuesday.
