SHIZUOKA — A civic group submitted signatures Monday to local electoral committees demanding that the Shizuoka Prefectural Government hold a referendum to determine whether the idled Hamaoka nuclear power station should be allowed to resume operations.
The group said it collected the signatures of 178,240 Shizuoka residents in two months from May — far more than the legally required minimum of around 62,000 needed to request a referendum.
Kawakatsu said he intends to submit a referendum proposal to the prefectural assembly in September after verifying the signatures. But he has not clarified whether he will support it.
