The U.S. once considered using 23 nuclear bombs to blast out a highway via Factually

Rising out of California’s Mojave Desert are the Bristol Mountains, nearly 4,000 feet of rock blocking easy passage through the scorching desert. For decades, Route 66 and the Santa Fe Railway have had to bend south, acquiescing to the mountains’ height. But in the 1960s, at the peak of atomic age, we had a plan to blast through the mountains once and for all—with nuclear bombs, of course.

It began with the Santa Fe Railway Company, which wanted a straighter and flatter path through the Bristol Mountains. The new route would require either a 2-mile long tunnel or cuts 500 feet deep into the mountain—far too expensive for railroad on its own. It did, however, pique the interest of the Atomic Energy Commission, which was searching for peacetime uses for nukes.

At the same time, California was building Interstate 40, a faster, smoother highway to replace Route 66. Wouldn’t the California State Division of Highways also be interested in a straight shot through the Bristol Mountains as well? Thus, Project Carryall was born.

This nuclear plan entailed a total of 23 bombs: 22 detonated in a row to carve out passage through the moutain and one more to create a giant crater for runoff water. In all, a total of 68,000,000 cubic yards would be excavated. Including the cost of the bombs themselves, the nuclear option would cost $13.8 million, $8 million less than the conventional method. “The study group has concluded that this project is technically feasible,” wrote a California highway engineer in a study, “It can be done, and it can be done safely.”

Safely? From our modern perspective, the feasibility report reads as surprisingly cavalier. Workers could enter when the radioactivity had sufficiently decayed—after just four days according to the report.

Could bacteria be used to ‘eat’ nuclear waste? Organisms that live on radioactive soil found in contaminated Peak District site via Daily Mail

Bacteria that eats radioactive waste has been discovered in the Peak District – and could now be used to help ‘eat away’ at nuclear waste.

Scientists at the University of Manchester say they have found ‘extremophile’ bacteria that can survive the harsh conditions of underground radioactive waste disposal sites.

The findings, published in the ISME (Multidisciplinary Journal of Microbial Ecology) journal, say the tiny waste-eating single-cell organisms could help with Britain’s growing problem of nuclear waste disposal.

It is the first time that scientists – who discovered the bacteria in contaminated soil in an old lime kiln – have found microbes like it.

Britain currently has enough waste to fill four Albert Halls and how it is disposed of is a growing problem.

Huge amounts of waste will be encased in concrete before being stored in underground vaults for thousands of years.

But when surface water eventually reaches the waste, it will react with the cement and become highly alkaline.

This triggers chemical reactions that create isosaccharinic acid (ISA), which can react with the toxic elements which make up the radioactive component of nuclear waste.

If the acid binds to radionuclides, such as uranium, then the radionuclides becomes soluble. It means it is more likely to flow out of the vaults, potentially seeping into drinking water and into the food chain.

‘Nuclear soup’: Japanese duo to serve Fukushima broth at London art fair via RT

Would you eat radioactive soup? That’s the somewhat unappetizing question facing visitors to next month’s Frieze art fair in London.

The fair, which is known for its eccentric conceptual art, will see a new project in which brothers Tomoo and Ei Arakawa, who go under the performance name “United Brothers”, make a soup using vegetables grown in Fukushima, the Japanese prefecture hit in march 2011 by one of the worst nuclear disasters in history.

The region faced a devastating earthquake and tsunami which caused the reactors to melt and nuclear material to seep out.

As a result, thousands of residents of the area suffered permanent health damage, particularly after consuming certain foods and water.

The project, called “Does this soup taste ambivalent?” was created in solidarity with victims affected by the nuclear disaster, the effects of which are still being felt today.

The soup’s main ingredient is the Daikon radish, a staple food in Fukushima.

The brothers, who are originally from Ikawa in Fukushima, will also involve their mother in the project. Throughout the festival, she will be making soup using the vegetables.

The brothers have insisted that the soup is safe for consumption.

Describing the exhibit, the frieze catalogue says that sharing food is a “gift” that “represents the essence of hospitality, sharing and humanity”.

“However, the soup United Brothers offer is laced with the (conceptual) possibility that it may be radioactive,” it adds.

Australian Power Company Caught Overcharging Customers to Make Up for Lost Revenue Due to Solar via The Courier-Mail

nergex documents reveal that the company last year planned to “recover” $469.8 million in “under-recovered revenue” over the next two years, with the amount to be tagged on to future prices.

The figure reflects the shortfall in actual revenue compared with what the Australian Energy Regulator allows the energy distributor to recover, with a new revenue cap set every five years.

It means householders pay for power they do not actually use, with the energy distributors able to reap revenue based on forecast demand rather than actual demand.

[…]
Solar energy growth has been a key factor, with a May 2013 Energex presentation showing solar energy production growth rose by eight times that of 2009.

Demand for energy was flat over the same period.

The newspaper also revealed allegations by Energex whistleblower Cally Wilson that Energex had examined ways to artificially increase revenues – and power prices.

Ms Wilson, a treasury analyst with seven years’ experience, said she was forced to manipulate data to reach targeted weighted average cost of capital (WACC) – a key factor in setting revenues and therefore household electricity bills.
