DARIEN – On Wednesday, the House Committee on Appropriations passed legislation – championed by Congressman Bill Foster – that would enable Argonne National Laboratory to save “millions of dollars” by removing on-site nuclear waste, according to a news release from Foster’s office.
The House Appropriations Committee passed the FY15 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill, which includes language that would enable Argonne to remove nuclear waste currently being housed on-site, the release stated.
Argonne spends about $3.8 million each year to maintain and house nuclear waste. The language added to the committee report by Foster would instruct the Department of Energy to provide additional funding to sites with small amounts of nuclear waste, like Argonne, to allow it to properly dispose of such waste, according to the release.
