東京五輪まであと2年 「福島で野球ができるのか」と迫る米メディア via Aera.dot
「あなたは福島で野球をできますか?」。そんなタイトルの記事がニューヨーク・タイムズ紙電子版に掲載されたのは昨年12月29日のこと。同記事は東京オリンピックで野球・ソフトボールの会場として使用予定のあづま総合運動公園(福島県福島市)の現状を紹介。五輪に対する地元の期待の声とともに、公園の一角に汚染土が積み上げられている様子を報じ、「(日本)政府は科学的な根拠のもと、正確な現状を伝えるべきだ」という声を取り上げている。 (略) 震災から7年の節目の3月11日、国内の各メディアが被災地の現状を報じた一方で、米国メディアのほとんどは追悼式典の内容に触れただけにとどまった。アメリカの全国紙であるUSAトゥデーの電子版は福島の現状に関して一行「事故のあった原発の除染作業にはまだ30~40年はかかるだろう」と通信社の記事を載せただけである。 「ほとんどのアメリカ人は原発事故が起こった事は覚えていても、それ以外の細かいことや復興がどの程度進んでいるかは知りません」。そう語るのはモンタナ大学でジャーナリズムの教鞭をとるナディア・ホワイト助教授。彼女は2017年夏、同大学の学生とともに3週間ほど福島県や宮城県を取材した。 同行した学生のひとり、レネ・サンチェスさん(21)は「現地を訪れるまで、福島は荒れ果てていて人が住んでいるとは思っていなかった」と語る。福島へ行くことを告げると家族や友人からは放射能の被害は大丈夫かと心配された。「アメリカのメディアは負の部分だけに焦点を当てている。もっと現地の復興の状況やそこで今も暮らす人々の生活にも目を向けるべきだ」 復興五輪とも称される東京オリンピックまで後2年。開催が近づくにつれ、世界からの福島への関心も高まることが予想される。確かに、震災、そして放射能被害の爪痕はいまだ深い。原発近隣の双葉町と大熊町の大部分はいまだ帰還困難区域に指定されており、仮設住宅も稼働し続けている。住民たちは今、何を想うのか、話を聞いた。 (略) 「海外の人々には、決して福島全体がひどい状態にある訳ではないことを知ってほしい」と語る。「荒廃している現状は確かにあります。しかし、福島県のほとんどの場所で人々は笑顔で普通の生活している。東京オリンピックがこうしたリアルな状況をみてもらえる契機になることを願います」 双葉町は、どんな状況にあるのか。 帰還困難区域は、震災以来ほとんどが手付かずの状態だ。かつての町の目抜き通りを歩くと商店の窓ガラスが割れ、床には品物が散乱している様子が目に入る。工事用のトラックが時おり通り過ぎる以外、音をたてるものはない。文字通りのゴーストタウンだ。 (略) 小学校を去る際、敷地内に咲く花に記者が触れようとしたとき、橋本さんは「触らないほうがいい」とやんわりと指摘した。「このあたりはまだ除染が行われていません」。“目に見えない放射線の恐怖”という言葉が改めて脳裏をよぎった。目に見えないからこそ、不安と恐怖が助長される。それが、福島が今も直面する風評への取り組みの難しさにつながる。 全文は東京五輪まであと2年 「福島で野球ができるのか」と迫る米メディア 関連記事: Would You Play Ball at Fukushima? via The New York Times
