Major Japanese trading house Itochu Corp. has already backed away from the project owing to the surge in the safety-related costs.
Among other Japanese companies, Toshiba Corp. has pulled out of the nuclear plant business overseas after incurring huge losses in the United States.
Hitachi Ltd. remains in talks with the British government on building new nuclear reactors in Wales.
