EU Approves State Aid for Dutch Nuclear Reactor via The Wall Street Journal

BRUSSELS–The Netherlands’ plan to provide a 80 million euros ($105 million) government loan to help finance a new nuclear reactor doesn’t violate European Union state aid rules, the EU’s executive arm said Wednesday.

The aid, which will support the construction of a nuclear reactor in Petten by 2023, “will contribute to the security of supply of medical radioisotopes for the benefit of European patients…without unduly distorting competition in the internal market,” the commission said in a statement.

The commission said the loan “represents only a small part of the total financing” for the project and “increases the likelihood of the entry of private investors” to finance the second phase of the project.
