Please join us this Thursday, April 28, at 5:00 pm CST for a talk by Shahla Farghadani! Shahla Farghadani is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan Department of Middle East Studies. She works on the history and literary historiography of the Persianate world. Her research interests focus on Indo-Persian literary culture and the social and intellectual history of early modern (16^th-18^th century) Iran and India.

The title of her talk is “Saʿdi, ghazal’s prophet: Ghazal as a sacred genre in Safavid-Mughal poetics.”

Please join us this Thursday, April 21, at 5:00 pm CST for a talk by Prof. Kamran Talattof! Kamran Talattof received his Ph. D. from The University of Michigan in 1996, and he has been teaching at the University of Arizona since 1999 after teaching at Princeton University for three years. He has taught courses on classical and modern Persian literature, Iranian cinema, Iranian history, the Persian language, and Middle Eastern women’s writings. Kamran Talattof has received a few awards for his teaching and services to the field of Persian and Iranian Studies. He has served on several national and international committees within academic associations and on the editorial committees of academic journals, as well as on several ad-hoc international committees. He’s authored, co-edited, and co-translated books focusing on issues of gender, sexuality, ideology, culture, and Persian language pedagogy. His articles al so focus on gender, ideology, culture, and fundamentalism. Kamran Talattof is the Founding Chair of the Roshan Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Persian and Iranian Studies.

The title of his talk is “The Story of Mahan: How Should We Read Nezami Ganjavi’s Poetry?” This talk (in Farsi) is based around a chapter from his new book, Nezami Ganjavi and Classical Persian Literature: Demystifying the Mystic.

لطفا این پنجشنبه در «زوم» برای سخنرانی استاد کامران تلطف با ما همراه باشید! کامران تلطف پژوهشگر ادبیات و جامعه‌شناسی فرهنگ، نویسنده و استاد دپارتمان مطالعات خاورمیانه در دانشگاه آریزونا است. او در سال ۱۹۹۶ مدرک دکترایش را از دانشگاه میشیگان دریافت کرد، پایان‌نامه‌اش دربارهٔ مفهوم تاریخ‌نگاری ادبیات در خاورمیانه بود. تلطف پس از سه سال تدریس در دانشگاه پرینستون از سال ۱۹۹۹ تاکنون در دانشگاه آریزونا مشغول به تدریس است. عرصه تحقیقات و تدریس وی شامل زبان و ادبیات فارسی، سینمای فارسی، تاریخ ایران، ادبیات سنتی و معاصر ایران، تاریخ ادبیات ایران، و آثار ادبی زنان در خاورمیانه می شود. تلطف بنیانگذار موسسه روشن در مطالعات فارسی و ایرانی است. ا

Join us this Thursday, April 14, at 5:00 pm CST for a talk by Mehdi Faraji! Mehdi Faraji is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at NYU. He has also earned a Ph.D. in Cultural Sociology from the University of Tehran. Dr. Faraji is a member of the Association for the Study of Persianate Societies’ Board of Directors and ASPS newsletter editor. He was previously a visiting scholar at the Department of Sociology at Harvard University and the Institute for Global Studies at Stony Brook University. Faraji’s current research is about citizenship and the making of an Islamic state in postrevolutionary Iran. His writings have appeared in numerous publications in English and Persian, including the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Middle East Critique, Middle East Research and Information Project, and Sociology of Islam. Among his works are “Protesting Clerical Welfarism in Iran’s Pious City,” “Iranian Cinema’s ‘Quiet Revolution,’ 1960–1978,” and “De-politicizing Westoxification: The Case of Bonyad Monthly.”

The title of his talk is “(Un)Making Revolutionary Children: The Case of Keyhan for Children.”

Please join us this Thursday, April 7, at 5:00 pm for a talk by Sahba Aminikia! Sahba Aminikia is an Iranian-American contemporary music composer, artistic director, performer and educator. Born and raised in Tehran and based in San Francisco, California, he has received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music with honors at San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His musical compositions have been widely performed around the world by contemporary classical ensembles orchestras, and bands, including the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, San Francisco Girls Chorus, Mahsa Vahdat, International Contemporary Ensemble, San Francisco Conservatory of Music New Music Ensemble, and Afghanistan National Institute of Music. Aminikia is also the founder and the artistic director of Flying Carpet Festival, a performing arts festival for children in war zones.

The title of his talk is “Music of Survival.” Please note: this talk will be in English.

این پنجشنبه، 7 اپریل، برای سخنرانی آقای صهبا آمینی کیا با ما همراه باشید! صهبا امینی کیا آهنگساز معاصر ایرانی-امریکایی‌تبار می‌باشد. وی مقیم شهر سان فرانسیسکو است و تحصیلات خود را در درجه کارشناسی ارشد در رشته آهنگسازی در کنسرواتوار سان فرانسیسکو به پایان رسانده‌است. قطعات موسیقی اش به‌طور گسترده‌ای در سراسر جهان توسط گروه‌های مختلف و ارکسترهای کلاسیک و نوین نواخته می‌شوند؛ از جمله مهسا وحدت و مدرسه عالی موسیقی افغانستان.  امینی کیا موسس و مدیر هنری فستوال “قالیچه پرنده” است، که جشنواره هنرهای نمایشی برای کودکان در مناطق جنگی است. ا
