Welcome to a new academic year! Please join us at Persian Circle this Fall for an exciting series of talks. We will be meeting from 5-6:30pm on Thursdays in Pick 218, and we are glad to host local academics, artists, and professionals to speak about their work related to Persian and/or Iran.  Here is our schedule:

Saeed Yousef is a poet, literary critic, translator, journalist, and Senior Lecturer of Persian Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. He has published ten books of poetry, including, most recently, Paarsi-Gu-ye Degar-Khu, Va Man dar Chashm-e Khargusham, Az Bute-ye Butighaa, and Az Talkhi-ye Chaai taa Bekaaham; several books of literary criticism, including Poetics and Politics – East and West: The Poetries of Ahmad Shaamlu and Bertolt Brecht; translations, including a verse translation of Brecht’s poetry into Persian; in addition to several books for the teaching of the Persian language.  “Hidden Treasures: Kate Buckingham and her Foundational Gift of Persian and Indian Paintings to the Art Institute of Chicago”

Madhuvanti Ghose (PhD, University of London) is the Alsdorf Associate Curator of Indian, Southeast Asian, Himalayan, and Islamic Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. She was previously Lecturer in South Asian Art and Archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London from where she received her doctoral degree, after which she held a research fellowship at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Dr. Ghose has curated many exhibitions at the Art Institute, including the site-specific Public Notice 3 (2010–11) by Jitish Kallat, Gates of the Lord: The Tradition of Krishna Paintings (2015–2016), Vanishing Beauty: Asian Jewelry and Ritual Objects from the Barbara and David Kipper Collection (2016) and India Modern: The Paintings of M.F. Husain (2017–18). She led the museum’s Vivekananda Memorial Program for Museum Excellence with the Government of India (2012–16). She serves on the executive committee of the board of trustees of the American Association of Art Museum Curators and is Vice President of its Governance and Nominating Committee.

Zahra Moeini Meybodi is a PhD student at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School. Her research focuses on Islamic philosophies of language and aesthetics as they relate to the doctrine of Qur’anic inimitability (ʿijāz).

Thomas Bijan Parsa is a first year master’s student at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado Denver with a major in history, and a minor in philosophy. His research interests are primarily the historical, literary, and linguistic development of early modern Persianate civilizations, and the role of the Persian language in the South Asian context.

“Loci of Power in the Achaemenid Persian Empire: Beyond the City.” Thursday 18th April, 5-6.30pm, Pick Hall 218(5828 S. University Ave, Chicago, IL 60637)

Rhyne King is a PhD Candidate in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. He majored in Classics and Linguistics at Duke University before beginning his studies at the University of Chicago. His main research interests are the social, economic, and political history of the Achaemenid Persian Empire (c. 550-330 BCE). His dissertation is tentatively titled “The House of the Satrap and the Governance of the Achaemenid Persian Empire.”

Taymaz Pour Mohammad is a PhD Candidate in Comparative Literary Studies at Northwestern University. His research engages with the peripheral translations and representations of Hafez and Persian poetry in English at the margins of comparative world literature, examining the ways in which translation attempts to reproduce the form of Hafez’s ghazals might sound a formal difference in the global literary culture.

تايماز پورمحمد دانشجوي دكتراي مطالعات ادبي تطبيقي در دانشگاه نورتوسترن است. پايان نامه ي او مطالعه اي است بر ترجمه ها و بازنمايي هاي حافظ و شعر فارسي كه در پيرامون ادبيات تطبيقي جهان حضور دارند. اين مطالعه تلاشي است براي پاسخ دادن به اين پرسش كه چگونه مي توان از طريق ترجمه هايي كه سعي در بازتوليد فرم غزل هاي حافظ دارند تفاوت فرمي را در فرهنگ ادبي جهاني به صدا درآورد.
