Tara Kangarlou is an award-winning journalist who has previously worked for NBC-LA, CNN, and Al Jazeera America. Her writing and reporting has also appeared in TIME, Vanity Fair, Al Monitor and the Huffington Post. Tara has spent much time in the Middle East covering the ongoing Syrian conflict – in particular the Syrian refugee crisis and the MENA region at large. As a result of her work in the field, in 2016 Tara founded Art of Hope – the first US nonprofit that strictly focuses on providing trauma-relief and mental health support through Art Therapy for Syrian refugees and vulnerable host communities in Lebanon.
After nearly four years of reporting and writing, her debut book The Heartbeat of Iran was released on June 1st 2021 (IG Publishing – NY). Far from being a political narrative, The Heartbeat of Iran invites readers into the heart and soul of a country that’s often seen through news headlines and a political fog that blurs the reality of life for millions of Iranians inside the country. Each chapter is a deeply nuanced, textured, and intimate journey into the diversity of beliefs, struggles, and complexities of life in today’s Iran – all told through the real stories of its people.

This week we are joined by Zeinab Vessal. Zeinab is an independent scholar in the history of Islamic art and material culture. Her research interests include early-modern Islamic painting, materiality, and Shia art and culture. She holds BFA and MFA degrees in Graphic Design from the University of Tehran College of Fine Arts and Tarbiat Modares University Department of Arts.
In this talk, she aims to investigate historic and religious matters of inscribed banners by the name of “Rayat-e-Nasr Ayat” (victory banners) in the context of Safavid iconographic paintings (from the late 15th to 19th century).

We are happy to have Dr. Mahmoodreza Esfandiar, an associate professor of Comparative Religions and Mysticism at the Islamic Azad University in Iran. His research interests center on studies in religion and mysticism, Jalal al-Din Rumi, manuscript studies, and East Asian studies.
His talk this week is titled “Descriptions and Images of Love in Mawlavi’s Work.”

Please join us this Thursday, October 15, at 5:00 pm, for a lecture by Dr. Abe Soheili. Dr. Soheili holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois, and he has worked in both the United States and overseas in foreign language education. In the United States, he worked with the Foreign Service Institute in Washington DC (which was the first entity in the US where Persian was taught in the US) as well as the University of Maryland; and overseas, he worked in ESL teaching in both Iran and Kuwait. In addition, he has written extensively on Persian language education and its frameworks.
His talk is titled “Historical developments in Persian grammar and teaching Persian as a foreign language.”
