Join us this Thursday, February 24, at 5:00 pm for our a talk by Prof. Babak Tabarraee! Babak Tabarraee is an assistant professor of instruction and the coordinator of the Persian program at The University of Texas at Austin. He has published three books of fiction in Iran as well as more than 20 literary and theoretical books translated from English. His writings in English have appeared in academic journals Dibur, Iranian Studies, The Soundtrack, Cinephile, and The Journal of Islamic and Muslim Studies. He is currently working on a book on Iranian cult cinema and a screenplay. 

The title of his talk is “All World Is My Home: The Depiction of Migration in Modern Iranian Media.”

Join us this Thursday, February 17, at 5:00 pm for our rescheduled talk with Prof. Kaveh Ehsani! Prof. Ehsani is a Professor of International Studies at DePaul University. He has had extensive experience as an international development planner on postwar reconstruction, rural development, water resource management, environmental planning, industrial renewal, and urban development. He has served as a consultant for the UNDP, Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies, the World Bank, FEMA, and the University of Tehran’s Institute of Social Research. Among Prof. Ehsani’s works are the books Working for Oil: Comparative Social Histories of Labor in the Oil Industry and Social History of Oil in Iran: The Built Environment and the Formation of Industrial Working Class. He is also a longstanding contributing editor to the journals Goftogu (Dialogue) in Tehran, Middle East Report (MERIP), and Iranian Studies.

Professor Ehsani’s current research is about the historical and contemporary impact of oil on society and politics; the historical sociology of warfare; the politics of property, land use, and water; the urban process and spatial change in Middle East cities; and the political economy and geopolitics of post-revolution Iran.

The title of his talk is “Rethinking the Social History of Oil Capitalism in Iran.”

لطفا این پنجشنبه در “زوم” برای سخنرانی دکتر کاوه احسانی با ما همراه باشید. دکتر احسانی استاد مطالعات بین المللی دانشگاه دپاول هستند. او به عنوان برنامه‌ریز منطقه‌‎ای در بانک‌ جهانی، برنامه‌ی ملل متحد برای توسعه و موسسه‌ی مطالعات سیاسی جان هاپکینز فعالیت داشته اند. در ایران نیز او در نقش برنامه‌ریز توسعه در حوزه‌های برنامه‌ریزی منابع آبی، خشک‌سالی، حکم‌رانی شهری و بازسازی پس از جنگ فعالیت داشته است. او همچنین پژوهشهای گسترده‌ای در حوزه تاریخ نفت در ایران و تاثیرات سیاسی اجتماعی آن به ویژه در مناطق نفتخیز دارند. از کتاب‌های استاد احسانی، می توان از «کار برای نفت: نگاهی مقایسه‌ای به تاریخ‌های اجتماعی کار در صنعت جهانی نفت» و «تاریخ اجتماعی نفت در ایران: محیط مصنوع و شکل گیری طبقه کارگر صنعتی» نام برد. علاوه بر این، او عضو بُرد مدیریت تحقیقات و پروژه‌ی اطلاعات خاورمیانه و عضو هیأت تحریریه‌ی مجله‌ی «گفتگو » در تهران، «گزارش خاورمیانه» و «مطالعات ایران» است. ا

Please join us this Thursday, February 10, at 5:00 pm CST for a talk by Prof. Maziyar Faridi! Maziyar Faridi is a scholar of comparative literature and film studies. His research interests include critiques of the sovereign subject in continental philosophy, identity and media, postcolonial transnational studies, and Middle East and North African modern literatures and cinemas. At the intersection of Iranian and global modernism (1922-1979), his current book project traces the emergence of a poetics that resists both colonial modernity and anticolonial recourse to identitarianism. Foregrounding an understudied corpus of Iranian literary and cinematic texts, Faridi argues that in this poetics rests the promise of new forms of political relationality beyond modernity’s politics of the sovereign subject. His research has been recognized by several awards, including the Charles Bernheimer Prize for the best dissertation from the American Comparative Literature Association (2020-2021) and the Ferdowsi Tusi Award for outstanding research in Persian literature and culture from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2018). He is an alumnus of the Paris Program in Critical Theory, a joint program between Northwestern University and Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle (Paris III). He holds certificates in Middle East and North African Studies (Northwestern), Critical Theory (Northwestern), and World Literature (Harvard University and City University of Hong Kong).

The title of his talk is “Awaiting Without Horizon: Notes on the Messianic Readings of Modern Poetry and Cinema of Iran.”

لطفا این پنجشنبه برای سخنرانی  استاد مازیار فریدی با ما همراه باشید! مازیار فریدی پژوهشگر ادبیات تطبیقی و سینما و استادیار گروه ادبیات انگلیسی و برنامه ­ی سینمای جهان در دانشگاه کلمسون است. وی مدرک دکتری خود را در رشته ­­ی ادبیات تطبیقی از دانشگاه نورث ­وسترن در سال 2020 دریافت کرد. در سال 2021، رساله ­ی دکتری وی با دریافت جایزه ­ی «چارلز برنهایمر» از انجمن ادبیات تطبیقی آمریکا به عنوان رساله ­ی برتر سال برگزیده شد. وی مشغول نگارش کتاب اول خود در مورد نقد سوژه ­­ی مدرن در شعر و سینمای قرن بیستم ایران است.   ا
