Claudia Yaghoobi is a Roshan Institute Associate Professor and inaugural director of Persian Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2013. As an Iranian-Armenian-American, Yaghoobi’s research concerns the literature of the Middle East with a special focus on Persian and Armenian literature. Her focus is on the members of sexual, ethnic, and religious minority populations, ones marginalized by normative society. Her first monograph, Subjectivity in ‘Attar, Persian Sufism, and European Mysticism was published by Purdue UP in 2017. Her second monograph, Temporary Marriage in Iran: Gender and Body Politics in Modern Persian Literature and Film was published by Cambridge UP in 2020.
The title of her talk is “Collective Consciousness and Transnationalism in Diasporic Works of Iranian Armenian Authors.”

Dr. Moin is the Department Chair and Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He studies the early modern Islamic world from comparative perspectives with a focus on concepts and practices of sovereignty. His book The Millennial Sovereign: Sacred Kingship and Sainthood in Islam (Columbia University Press, 2012) won the Best First Book in the History of Religions Award from the American Academy of Religion, John F. Richards Prize in South Asian History from the American Historical Association, and Honorable Mention for the Bernard S. Cohn Book Prize (South Asia) from the Association for Asian Studies. He has co-edited with Dr. Alan Strathern an interdisciplinary volume of essays, Sacred Kingship in World History: Between Immanence and Transcendence (Columbia University Press, 2022). Dr. Moin also served as guest editor of a special issue (forthcoming, 2022) of the journal Modern Asian Studies on “Sulh-i Kull: Mughal Political Theology in History, Theory, and Comparison.” In addition, he serves as a co-editor for Modern Asian Studies, published by Cambridge University Press.
The title of his talk is “Persian Panegyric versus Arabic Scripture in Mughal Imperial Architecture.”
Please join us this Thursday, January 20 at 5:00 pm CST for a talk with Hamed Yousefi! Hamed Yousefi is a filmmaker and PhD candidate in art history at Northwestern University. He researches interactions between modern art, Islam, and ‘erfan (Iranian-Islamic mysticism) in the latter twentieth century. His writings have appeared in numerous publications in English and Persian including e-flux and Herfeh: Honarmand, and in exhibition catalogues by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Grey Art Gallery (NYU), and MAXXI (Rome) amongst others. As a filmmaker, he has made a series of essay-films on the aesthetic history of the Islamic Republic, and, most recently, a feature-length documentary called The Fabulous Life and Time of Ahmad Fardid (with Ali Mirsepassi.)
The title of his talk is “Mysticism and Modern Art in the Second Pahlavi Era.”
