The “Intellect” (Aql) in Modern Iranian Qur’anic Exegesis

Thursday 2nd May, 5-6.30pm, Pick Hall 218(5828 S. University Ave, Chicago, IL 60637)
Zahra Moeini Meybodi is a PhD student at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School. Her research focuses on Islamic philosophies of language and aesthetics as they relate to the doctrine of Qur’anic inimitability (ʿijāz).

Qawwali Music and the Influence of the Persian Language in the Formation of Modern Hindi and Urdu (and a few short stories from Lucknow) موسیقی قوالی ونفوذ زبان فارسی در تشکیل دو زبان کنونی هندی واردو وچند داستان کوتاه لکهنؤ

Thomas Bijan Parsa is a first year master’s student at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado Denver with a major in history, and a minor in philosophy. His research interests are primarily the historical, literary, and linguistic development of early modern Persianate civilizations, and the role of the Persian language in the South Asian context.

توماس بیژن پارسا دانشجوی فوق لیسانس در مرکز مطالعات خاور میانه در دانشگاه شیکاگو است. پژوهش او بر رشد تاریخی و ادبی تمدنهای فارسی زبان دوران مدرن نخستین و نقش زبان فارسی در آسیای جنوبی تمرکز دارد.

Dear friends and colleagues, please join us this Thursday for Persian Circle. Rhyne King (PhD Candidate in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, University of Chicago) will be giving a talk in English entitled:

“Loci of Power in the Achaemenid Persian Empire: Beyond the City.” Thursday 18th April, 5-6.30pm, Pick Hall 218(5828 S. University Ave, Chicago, IL 60637)

Rhyne King is a PhD Candidate in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. He majored in Classics and Linguistics at Duke University before beginning his studies at the University of Chicago. His main research interests are the social, economic, and political history of the Achaemenid Persian Empire (c. 550-330 BCE). His dissertation is tentatively titled “The House of the Satrap and the Governance of the Achaemenid Persian Empire.”

“Peripheral Pleasures: Sounding the English translations of Hafez in the Global Scene” لذات پيراموني: نواختن ترجمه هاي انگليسي حافظ در صحنه ي جهاني

Taymaz Pour Mohammad is a PhD Candidate in Comparative Literary Studies at Northwestern University. His research engages with the peripheral translations and representations of Hafez and Persian poetry in English at the margins of comparative world literature, examining the ways in which translation attempts to reproduce the form of Hafez’s ghazals might sound a formal difference in the global literary culture.

تايماز پورمحمد دانشجوي دكتراي مطالعات ادبي تطبيقي در دانشگاه نورتوسترن است. پايان نامه ي او مطالعه اي است بر ترجمه ها و بازنمايي هاي حافظ و شعر فارسي كه در پيرامون ادبيات تطبيقي جهان حضور دارند. اين مطالعه تلاشي است براي پاسخ دادن به اين پرسش كه چگونه مي توان از طريق ترجمه هايي كه سعي در بازتوليد فرم غزل هاي حافظ دارند تفاوت فرمي را در فرهنگ ادبي جهاني به صدا درآورد.

Dear friends and colleagues, please find below the Spring schedule for Persian Circle! Our meetings will begin next week on Thursday, April 11, with a presentation by Taymaz Pour Mohammad. 
All meetings will be held on Thursdays, from 5-6:30 pm, in Pick Hall Room 218. Tea and cookies will be provided. Unless otherwise noted, all talks will be in Persian. Stay tuned for individual announcements at the start of each week. We look forward to seeing you there!
