Reminder! The Visual Resources Center has partnered with the Center for Teaching and Learning to offer the following workshop:

Visual Literacy in the Classroom: How to Find, Create, and Display Images

Friday, November 18, 10:30AM – 12:00 PM

Images in the classroom go beyond Google and PowerPoint: students are expected to be visually literate (according to the Association of College and Research Libraries, “able to find, interpret, evaluate, use, and create images and visual media”). This 90-minute session offers an introduction to the Visual Resources Center and a starting place for instructors seeking quality images for teaching in a visually literate classroom. The session will also cover techniques to engage students with image resources. Graduate instructors and Post-Docs are encouraged to attend.

ARTstor OIV Not Compatible with Mac OS 10.7 (Lion)

Many thanks to ATV reader Charles Choi, founder of YummyMelon software, for sending us a workaround to run OIV on Mac OS X Lion. After a brief local test (thanks, Peter Leonard!), it does seems to work:

Hello –

I’m writing to you in letting you know of a workaround to get your OIV app to work on OS X 10.7 (Lion). The short of it is to get replace the file “JavaApplicationStub” within the app with the one existing on Lion as described in this link:

http://informagen.com/JarBundler/StubFile.html

Please refer this procedure list to one who is conversant with the Unix command line:

Run Terminal and change to the directory holding OIV.app
cd OIV.app/Contents/MacOS
rm JavaApplicationStub
cp /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub .

This procedure was successful in getting OIV.app to run on Lion. That said the app is not fully tested as that’s your responsibility. But in the interim, you can let your users know that this workaround exists.

ARTstor’s Offline Image Viewer (OIV) is not yet compatible with the newest Mac operating system, OS 10.7 (OS X Lion). From ARTstor:

At ARTstor we strive to make both the ARTstor Digital Library and the OIV compatible with as many different browsers and operating systems as possible. We are only able to begin the process of making the OIV compatible once a new operating system is released. We received OS X Lion when it was released to the public and have been working to make the OIV compatible with it.

Currently, we have a version of the OIV with our Quality Assurance testers but I am unable to provide a firm date for the release of the OS X Lion compatible version of the OIV. Please know that we are working to get a compatible version to our users as soon as possible.

The Artists Documentation Program (ADP) interviews artists and their close associates in order to gain a better understanding of their materials, working techniques, and intent for conservation of their works. All interviews are conducted by conservators in a museum or studio setting.

To view the interviews, you must register and log in after agreeing to the ADP Acceptable Use Policy. Registration is free.

Alice Weston Great Houses in LUNA

Images from the University of Cincinnati Libraries Digital Collections, including architectural photographs by Alice Weston, are available in LUNA Commons:

Environmental artist Alice Weston photographed many of the houses in this collection in the 1990s for the publication Great Houses of the Queen City : Two Hundred Years of Historic and Contemporary Architecture and Interiors in Cincinnati, text by Walter E. Langsam, 1997. This collection of over 1400 images includes not only the photographs seen the book, but many more interior and exterior views as well as other properties not included in the publication.

How Do I Unzip a Folder of Images?

You’ve downloaded a zipped folder of images from LUNA or Webshare – what now?

PC Computers

If you’ve ever had trouble unzipping a compressed folder of images on your computer, please see the following links for instructions on different PC platforms.

Windows XP

Windows 7

Windows Vista

Mac Computers

If you’re using a Mac running OS 10.5 or later, the pre-installed tool called Archive Utility will unzip folders and files by default. After downloading a zipped file or folder, you should see a dialog box that asks if you’d like to open with Archive Utility. Select OK.

The unzipped folder should then be available in your Downloads folder, or wherever you specify downloads to save.

If you are not prompted to open the folder with Archive Utility, try downloading and then double-clicking on the folder or file to unzip.

With a single click, Zotero saves citations and allows you to create customized bibliographies in standard citation styles, including MLA, Chicago and APA. This hands-on workshop will introduce some of the key functions of Zotero such as: installing the Zotero extension in your web browser, adding citations to your Zotero library, organizing and managing your citations, creating a bibliography, and using the Microsoft Word plug-in to easily insert citations from Zotero into your documents.

Workshop is from 12-1pm in Regenstein 127.

Pierpont Morgan Online Exhibitions: The Black Hours

The Morgan Library and Museum features online exhibitions, including high quality, zoom-able digital images of works in the collection. A recent example of this is the digital facsimile of The Black Hours (MS M.493), a Book of Hours from 1470 created on vellum and stained or painted black:

The result is quite arresting. The text is written in silver and gold, with gilt initials and line endings composed of chartreuse panels enlivened with yellow filigree. Gold foliage on a monochromatic blue background makes up the borders. The miniatures are executed in a restricted palette of blue, old rose, and light flesh tones, with dashes of green, gray, and white.
