AFRICOBRA in Chicago (and in LUNA)

Tomorrow, the Philosophy show of the three-part AFRICOBRA in Chicago exhibition opens at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts. AFRICOBRA in Chicago presents three current and upcoming shows in Chicago take a deserved look at the Black Arts Movement in Chicago and the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AFRICOBRA), which was founded in 1968 by a group of Chicago artists. The three parts of the AFRICOBRA in Chicago exhibition are as follows:

  • Prologue, South Side Community Art Center, May 10–July 7, 2013 (curated by UChicago students)
  • Philosophy, Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, June 28–August 7, 2013 (curated by Rebecca Zorach)
  • Art and Impact, DuSable Museum, July 26–September 29, 2013

Many works from the exhibitions are from the collection of the South Side Community Art Center. The VRC is proud to include over 350 images from the SSCAC publicly in our online LUNA database.

Exhibitions of the Royal Photographic Society 1870–1915

Exhibitions of the Royal Photographic Society is a research database of more than 45,000 records culled from the exhibition catalogs of published by the Photographic Society in London from 1870 to 1915. The database contains detailed records of all exhibits, reproductions of the catalog pages, and information about “exhibitors, judges, hanging and selecting committee members, photographs, and companies.”

The Artists’ Books Showcase

The Manuscript, Archive, and Rare Book Library (MARBL) at Emory University has recently launched an online exhibit for their extensive collection of artists’ books called The Artists’ Books Showcase. The website features a gallery of images of artists’ books photographed by the artists themselves as well as essay content about the works, including techniques and contextual information. A section of the website features artists books made by Emory undergraduate students.

Dictionary of Islamic Architecture in ArchNet

Andrew Peterson published the Dictionary of Islamic Architecture in 1996, and the contents of that dictionary are available through ArchNet, with links to related images of buildings and publications hosted on ArchNet.

ArchNet offers a variety of resources beyond the Dictionary of Islamic Architecture, including a digital library of images and publications as well as discussion forums and other information related to the study of international Islamic culture architecture. ArchNet is free to use as long as you create an account.

Round-Up of Fashion and Textile Resources

The Museum at FIT has a comprehensive list of Costume and Textile Collections Online, with annotations about what you’ll expect to find in the database and other information about each particular collection. Their list includes collections from all over the world and highlights some of the best images of textiles and garments online.

Digitized Panoramic Postcards at the LoC

The Library of Congress recently finished a digitization project to make available more than 400 panoramic postcards from 1905–09. More than half of the postcards are “real photo” postcards. The cards, measuring approximately 3.5 x 10 in. had a heyday in the early 1900s.

Images can be downloaded as JPEGs or TIFFs.

Search tip: to find postcard images from a specific city or state, enter the place name after typing “LOT 14058” in the search box. The image above is of the Washington Park Hospital in Chicago.

Clipping Magic

Clipping Magic is a new web tool to easily remove the background from images. You upload your image, mark the image with the website’s red and green tools (red for background, and green for foreground), and voila! The areas marked red will be removed from the image and you can then download the edited image file. This is a great alternative to using Photoshop to remove a background, especially for removing image backgrounds on the fly.

Clipping Magic is currently free while the service is in alpha.

ICFA’s 16mm Film Collection Online

The Image Collections and Fieldwork Archives at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection in Washington, D.C. recently digitized fourteen 16mm films from its collection. The 14 films include footage of the Dumbarton Oaks grounds from the mid-1920s to the 1940s, as well as films made by the Byzantine Institute during the 1930s and 1940s that document conservation efforts on site at the Red Sea Monastery of Saint Anthony (Egypt), Hagia Sophia (Istanbul), and Kariye Camii (Istanbul). Several of the films are in color, giving viewers a chance to see “the process of cleaning, restoration, and preservation in great detail, as well as the quality and visual impression of the mosaics in their most shining state.”

The digitized films have been made available through the video streaming service Vimeo, and can be embedded into websites.

ARTstor Adds Installation Views from the Guggenheim

ARTstor and the Guggenheim recently released more than 5,000 installation views from some of the Guggenheim’s landmark exhibitions from the 1990s to the present. In addition, 1,000 installation views from the Guggenheim locations in Bilbao and Venice will be added. 200 contemporary and historic images of the three museums’ architecture will join the installation views.

Search Tip: There are many other installation and exhibition views available in ARTstor, and to search for them, try adding different keywords to your search terms, including “installation view” or “exhibition [and the exhibition’s title].”

Balboa Park Online Commons

 The Balboa Park Online Commons features more than 20,000 images of unique materials from 7 San Diego museums: the Mingei International Museum, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Air and Space Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum of Man, the San Diego Natural History Museum, and the Timken Museum of Art.

This unified digital collection allows users to keyword search to retrieve results across institutions or to browse by museum, “featured sets” (thematic groupings of objects), or by user sets. Users can create their own set or collection of objects by creating an account on the website, and there is also a feature to download a PDF of the object record.
