Music history major receives Javits Fellowship

Andrew Cashner, a graduate student in music history, has received a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship. The program provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Andrew’s interests include: Music and spirituality (esp. in the Christian tradition); liturgical history; domestic life; boundaries between public and private, sacred and secular, tradition and innovation; musical symbolism and hermeneutics; oral traditions and improvisation. Early modern Germany and Spain, 18th/19th-cent. Vienna, 20th/21st-cent. America.
