THE LIEDER PROJECT
From directors Amy Briggs and James Kallembach comes a collaborative endeavor that connects pianist and vocalists in the Performance Program: The Lieder Project. “Lied” is a German and Dutch word meaning “song.” A “lieder” is a 19th-century German art song, usually composed for one voice and piano. Students will perform well-known lieder of Schubert and Schumann on Thursday, February 9 at 12:15 pm — Noontime Concert in Fulton Recital Hall.

On The Lieder Project, Amy adds:

“Our idea was to have student vocalists and pianists explore the lieder repertoire together, in a collaborative fashion.  The literature is musically and literarily rich and multi-faceted, and as rewarding for pianists as it is for singers.  So this is a departure from the typical singer-and-accompanist arrangement, and as many of our students had not explored lieder before, this is a chance to get to know some wonderful music as well as collaborate in new ways.  We have already had one master class, with the local but internationally-renowned pianist/vocal coach Dana Brown (of the CCPA/Roosevelt University faculty), and hope to have one or two more before the end of the academic year.  In addition to this noontime recital there will be other chances for singer/pianist teams to perform, including an upcoming concert at the Smart Museum (Tragic Muse) in February, and a full concert setting of Schubert’s “Winterreise” which is slated for spring quarter.”
