A gondola glides down the aisle of Mandel Hall…

Sounds like the beginning of a joke, doesn’t it? But we’re not kidding!

Seats have been removed from Mandel Hall to accommodate the 9 ft. GONDOLA that will transport our mandolin-playing, would-be Kings during the upcoming production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers.

In addition, we’re excited to announce the inclusion of SUPER TITLES in Mandel Hall because, let’s face it, sometimes a W. S. Gilbert libretto is a bit troublesome to understand. The Gondoliers program glossary includes such vocabulary as the rarely sung ‘ebullition,’ ‘progenitor,’ and ‘halberdiers,’ which would be difficult to decipher without heavy British accents! The projected words will enhance the production and hopefully make the performance more accessible (e.g. enjoyable). Audiences are encouraged to provide written feedback during intermission. Paper will be provided.

Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers — a satiric tale of switched identities, mixed-up royalty, and the quest for true love — kicks off the 52nd season of the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company of Chicago March 9-11 in Mandel Hall. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8 PM, Sunday at 3 PM (daylight savings). The box office and will call open an hour before each show. We hope to see you soon!
