Another Composer Goes “Mad”

Graduate student in composition Eun-young Lee, whose interests include acoustic & electro-acoustic music; multimedia; music pedagogy; and film music, has been selected as a Composer Fellow for the Madness and Music Festival at the University of California at Davis.

The Madness and Music Festival will explore the link between musical composition and the composer, drawing on contemporary works to reflect current views regarding madness, exploring how music operates as a haven, a refuge, an escape, a statement of joy, or a means for survival. It also celebrates the 200th birthday of Robert Schumann, one of many composers who battled “madness.” The festival will feature works by composer-in-residence Lee Hyla, and premieres of new works by festival Composer Fellows.

In connection with this honor, the Empyrean Ensemble will perform Lee’s piece “Nok-du-kkot” for solo viola and chamber ensemble on October 29, 2010.
