“It Is What It Isn’t.” (but it IS free)

Join the Hyde Park Arts Center on May 7 for an AXIS Chicago event about the intersection of art, music, and physics at the Hyde Park Art Center. Free to University of Chicago Students (with University ID) Register today!

Explore the facets of harmony with artist Conrad Freiburg, physicist Heinrich Jaeger, and musicologist Larry Zbikowski through Freiburg’s exhibition “It Is What It Isn’t.” Artist Mia Ruyter will moderate this multi-disciplinary discussion that will allow these three very different individuals to examine how different types of knowledge inform our thinking and how each of these ways of thinking converge and diverge on the subject of harmony, movement, and language. Demonstrations of Freiburg’s 12-foot tall harmonograph, a drawing machine that creates visual representations of musical chords, as well as his hand-crafted telescope, musical instruments, and “destruction station” will all be featured. Freiburg’s ukulele and Zbikowski’s guitar may enliven the discussion.
