New Media Cabinet Equipment in CWAC Classrooms

Our media equipment in CWAC classrooms is better than ever! Each classroom is now equipped with an HD projector, HDMI and VGA connections, and speakers.

Media cabinet keys no longer required! To turn projection on, simply hit the ON button. To connect your laptop to the projection, choose HDMI or VGA, connect your computer to the appropriate cable (newer Mac adapters now included), and press the appropriate button on the panel. You’re all set!

Do you need assistance with EndNote, Zotero, or RefWorks? Or would you like to learn more about how these citation managers can help make your research and writing process easier? Visit the TECHB@R during office hours for tips and advice on using EndNote, RefWorks, and Zotero. No appointment is necessary.

Spring office hours for citation management software at the Tech B@r will be from 3-5pm on Mondays (not available on April 9th). The TECHB@R is located on the first floor of the Regenstein Library (to the left of the reference desk, near the stairs). Additional technology training will be available throughout the quarter at the TECHB@R; watch the library’s event calendar for more details.

Connecting to the Internet On Campus

As a reminder, when computing on campus it’s always best to connect via Ethernet. Access to LUNA and other databases will be much faster when using a wired connection. If you must use a wireless connection, see IT Services hints for maximizing success using wi-fi.

If you are using the wireless network on campus and are experiencing difficulties, please contact IT Services with the day, time, location, and description of the problem. You may also consider the data rate of the airport on your laptop, and/or the router/modem hardware used at home. 802.11n provides the fastest connection. Click here for more information.

Sharpening an Image in Photoshop

Do you have an image that is out-of-focus? The Sharpen tool in Photoshop can help!

Open the image in Photoshop. Zoom in (Select View from the menu and go to Actual Pixels for best results).

The image, at 100% zoom, looks blurry. The letters appear fuzzy.

To sharpen, go to Filter > Sharpen, and select Sharpen or Sharpen More.

As you can see, the edges are crisper and the legend is easier to read after sharpening. You can sharpen as many times as is necessary, but make sure that the image doesn’t begin to look pixelated. This is a sign of over-sharpening.

Default Collections in LUNA

Are you getting strange results when searching in LUNA?

The VRC recently made some LUNA collections public (such as the Renaissance Society Archive). By default, LUNA searches these public collections first.

To change the default to search or browse all collections, always access LUNA from the VRC website or the link below:

https://luna.lib.uchicago.edu/luna/servlet/s/bdc26x

You can also change your user settings (including default collections) by following the directions here.
