Marina Abramović Performance, Live at MoMA.org

MoMA is currently hosting a retrospective of work by performance artist Marina Abramović. The retrospective traces her career over the past four decades with approximately fifty pieces including photographs, video, and sound, as well as live re-performances of Abramović’s works by other people. The show also includes a new, original work performed by Abramović in the museum, marking the longest duration of time that she has performed a single solo piece. Hidden Gems at the Indianapolis Museum of Art

The Indianapolis Museum of Art‘s website includes Tag Tours, or online tours by IMA staff that provide unique and unexpected connections to the museum’s extensive collection of art. These online tours include works that are not necessarily on display in the galleries. Examples include “Happy Hour” (works of art that feature wine, beer, and other libations), “WTF” (“What’s this for?” – works of art that are thought-provoking, quirky, odd, funny and potentially, from another planet), and “Impress my Boss/Grandma/Hot Date” (works from around the world and featured in the galleries so you can “study” before your next visit to the museum). You can also add your own tags.

New Podcast Series from TateShots: Sound & Vision

TateShots is a podcast from the Tate Modern which presents a selection of short videos each month about modern and contemporary art. The next TateShots series, called Sound & Vision, will feature musicians who cross boundaries into visual art: Talking Heads front-man David Byrne; The Fall’s Mark E. Smith; Cosey Fanni Tutti of Throbbing Gristle; anti-folk singer and cartoonist Jeffrey Lewis; performance poet Lydia Lunch and the prolific Billy Childish – who will be shown interviewing himself. Credo Reference Adds National Gallery Images

Credo Reference, the award winning online reference library, now includes National Gallery London images in the Credo General Reference Collection. Credo Reference is available through the University of Chicago library by clicking here.

Credo has licensed high resolution images of the paintings in the National Gallery. Students and faculty can now easily find quality images from this museum to aid their research. This page includes a browsable list of the National Gallery images available through Credo.

Two New Art Historical Databases Available from the Frick Collection

The Frick Collection has recently released two databases that focus on provenance of artworks. The Archives Directory for the History of Collecting in America helps researchers locate primary source material about American collectors, dealers, agents and advisors, and the repositories that hold those records. The Archives include collectors who purchased American art, but also antiquities and non-Western art. The Montias Database of 17th Century Dutch Art Inventories provides detailed information on ownership of works of art during the Dutch Golden Age. It was compiled by late Yale University Professor John Michael Montias, and contains information from 1,280 inventories of goods (paintings, prints, sculpture, furniture, etc.) owned by people living in 17th century Amsterdam.

Cross Collection Searching at the Smithsonian

The Smithsonian Institution recently released their Collections Search Center online tool which searches over 2 million records with 265,900 images, video and sound files, electronic journals and other resources from the Smithsonian’s museums, archives and libraries. You can specify that the search return only results with online media. It is also possible to browse by topic, as well as by place, culture, language, and more.

A list of currently available collections is available here, and more collections will be added over time.

ARTstor Launches MoMA Painting and Sculpture Collection

ARTstor and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) have just launched more than 1,400 images of works from the MoMA’s permanent collection in the Digital Library. The images have been selected from the museum’s unparalleled collection of modern and contemporary painting and sculpture. The works in the Department of Painting and Sculpture represent a comprehensive overview of major artists and artistic movements from the late 19th century to the present.
