Comments: for scholars whose research in the humanities or social sciences focuses on the former Soviet Union excluding the Baltic states “who demonstrate a particular need to utilize the library, archival, and other specialized resources of the Washington, D.C. area”; “Policy-relevant research is preferred”; must either have PhD or be doctoral candidates nearing the completion of their dissertations; applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Kennan Institute Title VIII Research Scholarships

Length: three to nine months

Comments: for doctoral students who will have completed dissertation before taking residence at Kennan Institute, scholars in early career stages (before tenure), or whose careers have been interrupted; “Those proposals related to regional Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Central Asia, the Caucasus and contemporary issues are particularly welcome.”

WARA Pre-doctoral Fellowship Competition

Length: 2-3 months of research in West Africa during summer

Comments: for field research related to preparation of doctoral research proposal, or research related to another terminal degree (MFA or MPH); “…open to U.S. citizens who are currently enrolled in graduate programs at institutions of higher education in the United States. Oxford Martin Programme on Human Rights for Future Generations Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Programme Co-ordinator

NEH/FPIRI Fellowship Competition for Scholars Conducting Field-Based Humanities Research in Palestine
