Mahsa Pashaei is a first-year MA student at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). Majoring in humanities and literature, she earned her high school diploma from Iran. Later, she received her BA in Iranian Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. Mahsa is interested in contemporary Iranian literature, and this week she will talk about her endeavor on a better understanding of the Sohrab Sepehri and his works.

مهسا پاشایی دانشجوی سال اول دانشکده ی مطالعات خاورمیانه در دانشگاه شیکاگو است. وی دیپلم خود را در زمینه ی ادبیات و علوم انسانی در ایران اخذ نموده و به تحصیل در حوزه ی ایرانشناسی در دانشگاه لوس آنجلس کالیفرنیا پرداخت. ایشان علاقه مند به ادبیات مدرن هستند و در این هفته تلاش های خود را جهت دست یابی به شناختی بهتر از سهراب سپهری و آثار ایشان با ما در میان خواهند گذاشت.

Saeed Yousef is a poet, literary critic, translator, journalist, and Senior Lecturer of Persian Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. He has published ten books of poetry, including, most recently, the bilingual book Lives Lost: In Search of a New Tomorrow*; several books of literary criticism, including Poetics and Politics – East and West: The Poetries of Ahmad Shaamlu and Bertolt Brecht; translations, including a verse translation of Brecht’s poetry into Persian; in addition to several books for the teaching of the Persian language.

سعید یوسف شاعر ، منتقد ادبی ، مترجم ، روزنامه نگار و استاد زبان و ادبیات فارسی در دانشگاه شیکاگو است. ایشان تا اکنون ده کتاب شعر منتشر کرده اند، و عنوان جدیدترین آنها جان باختگان به بویِ فردائی نو است. ایشان چندین کتاب نقد ادبی منتشر کرده اند، از جمله آنها شعر و سیاست – شرق و غرب : شعر احمد شاملو و برتولت برشت است. علاوه بر این چندین کتاب برای آموزش زبان فارسی چاپ کرده اند.

Ezzat Goushegir has published six books in Farsi, including four collections of short stories, a collection of two plays and a book of poetry. She writes in both English and Farsi and her plays have been produced in the U.S., Europe, China and the Philippines. She currently teaches at DePaul University in Chicago.

عزت گوشه گیر کنکاشی خواهد داشت در باره پناهجویان جهان به مثابه تبعیدیان ، زندانیان و بردگان نوین در جهان امروز.و یکی از نمایشنامه های خود را روخوانی خواهد کرد.

عزت گوشه گیر نویسنده و نمایشنامه نویس، شش کتاب شامل یک مجموعه شعر، چهار مجموعه قصه، و یک مجموعه نمایشنامه به زبان فارسی به چاپ رسانده است. نمایشنامه های او به زبان انگلیسی در شهرهای مختلف آمریکا ، کانادا، چین، سوئد، فیلیپین و انگلیس به روی صحنه آمده اند. وی در دانشگاه دپال شیکاگو به تدریس نمایشنامه نویسی، داستان نویسی و شعر  اشتغال دارد.

Salimeh Hosseini was born and raised in Iran. She double majored in Persian Language and Literature and Archaeology at the University of Tehran for her BA. After getting her MA in Philosophy of Art from the Art University of Tehran, she moved to the US. Currently, Salimeh is a second-year student in the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities at the University of Chicago, focusing on the history of Islamic Art. She is also working as a curatorial intern at the department of Indian, Himalayan, and Islamic Art at the Art Institute of Chicago.

سلیمه حسینی در ایران متولد و بزرگ شده است. ایشان مدرک کارشناسی را در رشته های زبان و ادبیات فارسی و باستان شناسی و مدرک کارشناسی ارشد را در رشته فلسفه هنر از دانشگاه تهران دریافت نمودند. الان ایشان دانشجوی سال دوم در برنامه کارشناسی ارشد هنرهای انسانی با تمرکز بر تاریخ هنر اسلامی در دانشگاه شیکاگو هستند، و در بخش هنرهای هندی، هیمالیای، و اسلامی به عنوان کارآموز در موسسه هنری شیکاگو کار می کنند.

دنیای پشت پنجره در بوم نقاشی

“The world beyond the window on canvas”

Ladan Ghajar is an inspiring Iranian artist who was born into an artistic family. Most of her work has channeled her experience with metaphor and figural vignettes that provide the archetypical landscapes populated by unusual cast of characters. However, her real day-to-day challenge has been demonstrating how she could layer her past traditions while creating a new artistic vocabulary that embodies the ongoing issues of our time in the manner of surrealism and symbolic passageway. She received her degree in 2008 from The School of Art Institute in Chicago.

لادن قاجار در یک خانواده هنری در تهران چشم به جهان گشود. بیشتر آثار و تجربه های لادن، او را با استعاره ها و نقوش های متفاوتی که نشان از گذشته ها ای دور و باستانی دارد حکایت می کند اما اینبار با نگاه انسان امروز به سطح بوم نقاشی و یا در متافرم اشعار بیرون می ریزد.زندگی وی در عین چالش های زندگی روزمره خود ومحیط اطراف اش در دنیای فیزیکی تاثیرات خود را بر او همواره وارد می نماید و وی کماکان سعی می نماید تا بتواند لایه برداری از وقایع و سنت های گذشته و حال و حتی آینده نماید و الگويي نوین به زوایای زندگی انسان وارد کند تا شاید به سهم خود بتواند  فرهنگ لغت جدیدی از هنر را ارائه کند در مقابل دنیائي که در مرز فی مابین بودن و نابودی سرگردان است و چه سخت ارابه خویش را از Visual Art به پیش می راند.لادن سرانجام مدرک تحصیلی خود را در رشته

“Stylistic reworkings of a Persian dāstān: Sayf al-mulūk between Persian and Middle Bengali”

About the talk: The story of the Egyptian prince Sayf al-Mulūk and the fairy Badīʿ al-Jamāl circulated throughout the Muslim world from at least the 13^th century onward. The story became an important vector of Islamization of local narrative traditions and was adapted in many literary idioms, in prose and verse, in the form of anonymous and authorial texts, but also in purely oral traditions. Under the aegis of the National Endowment for the Humanities, I am currently preparing a scholarly edition and translation of a Middle Bengali version of the story from the mid-seventeenth century and the edition of two Persian versions from South Asia: an anonymous prose text from seventeenth-century Deccan (Staatsbibliothek, Berlin), which provides a basic version of the narrative, and a more elaborate prosimetrum from nineteenth-century Bengal (Rājnārāyaṇ Basu Smr̥ti Pāṭhāgār, Medinipur EAP921/CSSS, Calcutta). After a brief introduction, we will read excerpts of the same narrative section (in Persian) from each version and comment on the stylistic reworkings performed in the Middle Bengali poem and the prosimetric text.

Najaf was born and raised in Khoramshahr, and graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago. With the intent of bringing Persian culture to his US community, he founded a radio show, Radio Sedaye Vatan (Voice of the Homeland). Najaf is now an active member of the Persian Poetry Society, where he developed a passion for oration and performance.

نجف حسینی در خرمشهر متولد و بزرگ شده و از دانشگاه ایلینویز در شیکاگو فارغ التحصیل شدند. ایشان با هدف آوردن فرهنگ فارسی به جامعه آمریکا نمایش رادیویی به نام رادیو صدای وطن را تأسیس کردند و اکنون یکی از اعضای فعال انجمن شعر فارسی هستند، جایی که نسبت به نقالی پر شور شدند.

Sam Molaie received his MA in translation studies from the Research and Science Branch of Azad University in Tehran. His interests are Persian literature, translation studies, comparative literature, and mythology. He is conducting a part of his research on the translation of classical Persian literature at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
