UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC CELEBRATES THE AMERICAN WEST AT THE ANNUAL HALLOWEEN FAMILY CONCERT ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27

Hyde Park School of Dance and University Chorus Join University Symphony Orchestra;

“The Wild, Wild West!” Explores the Sound of the American Frontier

CHICAGO – Pack your covered wagon for a journey along the trails of Appalachia and Oregon to the University of Chicago’s Mandel Hall! On Saturday, October 27 at 7 PM and 9 PM, the University Symphony Orchestra will present “The Wild, Wild West!” – an evening of campfire storytelling, special effects, and hoedown music. Hyde Park School of Dance collaborates with the orchestra and University Chorus in these back-to-back concerts, perfect for families.

For Halloween 2012, the University Symphony Orchestra will perform a pioneering evening of fiddling, dancing, storytelling, and singing.  Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid ballet forms the centerpiece of the program, which also includes John Williams’ The Cowboys Overture and music from The Magnificent Seven, Paint Your Wagon, The Wild, Wild West, and Copland’s Rodeo.  The Hyde Park School of Dance (August Tye, Artistic Director) and the University of Chicago Chorus (Mollie Stone, Guest Director) join in the fun – in costume, of course!  USO Music Director Barbara Schubert conducts the extravagantly garbed 100-member University Symphony Orchestra.

A distinctive grand entrance by Maestra Schubert into the decorated theater will further enhance the concert-going experience, creating an atmosphere sure to spark excitement and imagination in listeners of all ages.  Children and their families are encouraged to wear their costumes to the performance.  Donations are requested at the door: $4 students/$8 adults.  For more information, call the Event Hotline at 773.702.8069 or visit music.uchicago.edu. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
