June 10 meeting

For all Formal Object participants, esp. those who could not come last time:

We are going to have an additional meeting, on Aristotle’s account of the good and happy life as the object of human wanting.

To allow for a test of his theory, there will we Korean style food and juice.

Hoping to see you (on Tue, 10th June, 9.45 am, Stuart Hall 209) –

Anselm

Moss – “Aristotle’s Non-Trivial, Non-Insane View that Everyone Always Desires Things under the Guise of the Good”

Dear All,

Please find below Moss’s article, “Aristotle’s Non-Trivial, Non-Insane View that Everyone Always Desires Things under the Guise of the Good” from Tenenbaum’s Desire, Practical Reason. Anselm suggested this as a more digestible version of ‘Aristotle on the apparent good’ by Moss.

Gredt translation part 2

Dear reading group participants,

Please find attached a second installment of translations from the Gredt reading.  Gredt.2

I’ve added a couple more sections and cleaned up the previous translation, and added a glossary.

I’m sorry to send this out so late, I was unwell over the weekend which threw me off schedule. If you do find any time to look at it, the main part I would like to discuss is only a few lines over a page (No. 820, p. 4-5).

Best,
Joshua

Text for April 29

From Josh Mendelsohn:

I’ve prepared a translation of the parts of Gredt (PDF below) that I intend to focus on this Tuesday. I have attached this in addition to the original that Professor Müller sent out previously. A word of warning: I am far from a Latin expert and have used this as a learning exercise. I welcome any improvements and corrections to the translation.
