Scott Sherman, AB’04, offers advice, jokes to aspiring writers

Scott Sherman, AB’04, has worked for the Onion, Second City, and most recently a new Comedy Central sketch show, Important Things with Demetri Martin. He is also the author The Dangerous Book for Dogs and The Devious Book for Cats, both parodies of the best-selling The Dangerous Book for Boys. As busy as his schedule is, Sherman took some time in November to return to his alma mater to give a workshop titled “Writing (for Money!).” The University of Chicago Magazine relays some of his advice:

“If you don’t have a work ethic, it’s just not going to happen.” Despite the lack of formal writing preparation at Chicago, “you’re all way ahead of 90 percent of the people on the road you’re going down,” he reassured the audience. Enrolling at Chicago means you’re up for a challenge.
