Harper Montgomery is a first year Ph.D. student in the Art History Department. She received her master’s in Modernist Art History and Criticism at Columbia University in 1996 and returns to academia after working at various museums in New York and Texas. Most recently, she organized exhibitions and researched prints and artists’ books as an assistant curator in the Print Department at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. There she worked on an exhibition of early 20th century Russian avant-garde books, organized a performance by contemporary artist Francis Alÿs, and researched and expanded the collection of Latin American prints, among other things.
At the University of Chicago, she has pursued her obsession with questions regarding how works of art function in systems such as the museum, the market, the press, etc. A related obsession is the relationship between the viewer and the work of art, and how artistic media affect the viewer’s senses and vice versa. The proverbial enigma of painting-as-medium and its modern history in Latin America is another issue that has continued to engage her.
