Overview / Ordbogimik suliaqarneq

Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic) is the official language of Greenland. It is a member of the Inuit-Yupik-Aleut language family and is closely related to Canadian Inuit languages.

In 2009, Oqaasileriffik (the Greenland Language Secretariat) saw the need for a Kalaallisut-English bilingual dictionary for the public schools of Greenland. The most recent Kalaallisut to English dictionary is Christian Wilhelm Schultz-Lorentzen’s Dictionary of the West Greenland Eskimo Language from 1927 and there are no English to Kalaallisut dictionaries. In order to translate from English to Kalaallisut, one must go through an English/Danish and Danish/Kalaallisut dictionaries.

Oqaasileriffik invited Professors Jerry Sadock and Lenore Grenoble at the University of Chicago to collaborate with them on their undertaking. Together, they are creating a bilingual dictionary in collaboration with Carl Christian Olsen and the staff at Oqaasileriffik which has the needs of both Kalaallisut and English speakers in mind throughout the process.
